Myth of the Deep Sea

These are cropped pictures of an individual wearing a Rolex. Can you tell what watch it is? Can you tell how large the individual is? Does the watch look out of place or disproportionate?

The gentleman is 5'6” and 150 lbs (sorry world, I'm too lazy to convert to metric) and relatively slim build. The watch is obviously a Deep Sea. I challenge anyone to say that the watch is too large.

The point is that at greater than 3 paces, the Deep Sea looks like any other watch, the size is virtually indistinguishable from every other sport watch out there. So for everyone knocking the size, that's a self-perception not borne out by reality.

So for me, I don’t really care if they have a “mid size” sea dweller, I don’t care if Rolex discontinues the Deep Sea, my watch works for me. It doesn’t look too big, it doesn’t look too small, but it looks great with short sleeves. I hate that I sometimes bang it against a door frame, but it’s got enough steel that it should last long enough to give to my kids one day. By that time, they’re probably not going to be arguing whether it’s too big or going out of style. It will just be Dad’s watch.

There is just one flaw in your reasoning
You say that at greater then 3 paces, the Deep Sea looks like any other watch....
That would be fine if my eyes were further then 3 paces away from my watch when I look at the time.

I never thought the watch looked too big when wearing this sort of attire however when I could not fit it under most of my long sleeve dress shirts I made the decision to trade it off. I like to rotate all of my pieces to the office.

The size of the person doesn't matter as much as the size of the wrist does. In those pictures he has a wrist big enough to accommodate the size of the DSSD. I have a 6 inch wrist and it looked absolutely ridiculous on me and I don't think anyone would be able to argue otherwise.

As long as you like it, you do not need to explain to us as to why the watch works for you.

Yeah, not really. Still looks huge imo, and this guy has pretty chunky arms/wrists.

If you put it on your wrist and it doesn't feel comfortable or if it makes you feel self-conscious, then don't buy it.

If you put it on your wrist and it hits the right buttons and you can't stop looking at it, then buy it.

As they say in the UK, simples.

Agree that it looks ok in these pictures, but also agree with the comments about wrist size.

The other important thing, is that whist the deep sea looks just about ok on me from these kind of angles, it looks totally stupid from other angles; the case diameter is only a small issue for me, it's the case depth that's the problem (which isn't noticeable from the pictures above).

I love the DSSD but it IS way too big for me sadly. So the new SD4000 answers my prayers entirely!

I don't think the watch is too large, I think the gentleman is too small...

OK, sorry about the cheap joke. I truly think it is all in the eye of the beholder. Some people will always come out and disagree and have view on basically anything. To me the watch looks fine, proportion-wise.

I will be honest, I like your sentiment of dad's watch and bravo to that but it looks like a clock to my trained eye.

Size looks good but it's subjective in terms of the comfort.

When I tried on a DSSD, I felt it was too thick for my comfort.

My subjective assessment of it's suitability for me, of course, has no bearing on anyone else's enjoyment of it on their wrist.

If it works for you (and it does look fine on the gentleman in the photos!), then that's all that matters.
