New Submariner-Ticking Sound
I picked up a brand new Submariner yesterday from a jeweler referred by a good friend and owner of several Rolex timepieces. I paid $7800 OTD and received the box with all original documentation, box and warranty card from the AD and my name listed as the original owner for warranty purposes with matching serial numbers which I verified through "Bob's Watches" has a production date of 2011.
The watch had all the plastic protective coating and tags I would imagine accompany all new Rolex watches. The jeweler also provided me with an appraisal for insurance purposes. I inspected the piece for all known issues in an effort to authenticate the watch (thanks to all the feedback from the veterans on this forum--Thanks). I do hear a ticking sound when placing my ear to the crystal and became concerned as many members suggest that Rolex movement sweeps and does not "tick." I have read that some movements produce a ticking sound (6-8 ticks per second). Should I be concerned about the ticking or rest easy that the watch I paid for is authentic? I apologize for the redundancy if this question has already been addressed. This is my first Rolex and post on this forum, your feedback is appreciated. |

It's ok, you should hear a very high-speed ticking sound. (eight times a second if you can count that fast).

Normal, that "ticking" can lull me to sleep on very quite nights. Love the sound that a mechanical watch movement makes. Congratulations on your new Sub.

This is an urban legend. Rolexes tick, and the second hand advances in discrete steps. What's meant by "sweep" is that the discrete steps are fractions of a second, resulting in a smoother apparent motion that you would see with a watch that operates at a lower frequency.

Enjoy the new watch!

If you have an iPhone 5S record the second hand (slo-mo) and then play it back. You will notice 8 discreet steps per second.

yep, normal. If you look carefully at the second hand.. it is really ticking in very small increments, not a smooth sweep. At a glance though it appears smooth. I enjoy listening to it :)

Yeah that ticking is actually the sound of your inner Watch Geek counting down the moments until you purchase your next Rolex!

As long it the sound it not
Tick----------Tick-------------Tick And it IS Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick. Then's it's automatic. I've not come across any automatic watches that are silent (Though perhaps there are some). |
