That's really great, padi...Do you happen to have a pic handy of the Daytona? Love to see it!

Gold is something I need to buy.
My colleague is constantly telling me to go and buy gold right now.
But he says its a long term investment, not for just 3-5 years.
So you recommend 1 ounce bars? Then I might get to buy a of them!

What do you do, maybe I should go back to school and get a degree in that field! Unless you live with your parents. Then I can understand. Our youngest has zero bills except for his party funds and gas for his car I bought for him. Yes I pay for his car insurance as well. Lucky kid!!!!
Yep!
Sounds quite unreal. My employer pay for my accomodation in China when Im here 10+ months/year working on projects and those few times Im actually home in Sweden I sleep on my fathers couch.
Its the perfect situation for building up a future, which Im trying to do. Goal is to be able to cash in on a $130k house within a few years.

One perspective is that if you buy a rolex that you would be willing to wear well into the future, then you have a timepiece that will literally stand the test of time. your investment in that watch will be care and maintenence over the years but that care and maintenence will likely be less than buying successive new watches of lesser quality over the years. Several people on TRF will tell you they have worn a particular watch for 10, 20, 30 and 30 plus years! the "investment" was in the initial capital outlay and the ongoing maintenence and care allows you to save on having to buy a new watch every 3-5 years.
I have my Root Beer which I feel like it will stay with me a very long time.
A pepsi and so can always be sold! But so can the Root Beer also.

Awesome stories!
If one could only go back to the early 80's... Would invest in big block muscle cars.
Buy all of them!

Personally, I like these lately, and any that I've purchased recently are this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Gold_Maple_Leaf

The purest on earth, and made with %100 gold mined only in Canada, so you can live knowing nobody suffered for your gold.

Beautiful, loved the world over & easy to sell if need be.

By the way, if you do buy a Rolex, I suggest you come down to Hong Kong, not buy on the Mainland.

Hey, I can think of worse things than a pile of beautiful, shiny gold coins

Gold is also addictive, brother. Once you start buying....

Rolex as investment?

Peter - that is a great story and picture. Ironic how our Dads impact our perspective. Mine was WWII Army officer and served in Aleutians and India when Axis threatened overrunning Alaska, and when the Burma trail needed support.

But his grail came in form of an Omega. Hence, my first Swiss watch was an Omega.

But the long term appreciation of the model you mentioned will take a long time since so many millions are out there now. No real investment value point currently...
Great advice!

Real quick:

Bought a brand new S/S Submariner w/date in 1984. Paid $875. Wore it DAILY for 29 years. Sent in four times for maintenance.

Traded it in last November on a new two-tone Submariner w/date (116613LN). AD gave me $3,500 trade-in value. I was shocked! That's 4 times what I paid for it 29 years ago. Not bad after for 29 years of excellent service. I realize he may have discounted the new watch slightly without a trade, but remember, I wore it for 29 years! Another $300 in tax savings as well.

Investment? Yeah, I guess it was. Maybe my heirs will do well 29 years from now........

Setting aside the question of whether goldbugs have any idea what they're talking about when it comes to investments and economics, if you're going to own physical gold I also recommend bullion coins like the aforementioned Canadian Maple Leaf, or the American Eagle, or 24K American Buffalo (also .9999 pure).

In the U.S., anyway, any of these coins can be exchanged without an assay and the spread between the dealer's buy and sell prices is very small. They are probably the most easily and inexpensively convertible form of physical gold available.

Anything is an investment if you could sell it for more than you bought it for...
