Hi, new member with a question

Hi, I joined recently and have been reading quite a bit of helpful information as I've looked to make my first Rolex purchase.

Question though, as I was working with a seller on a purchase, we got held up by my desire to authenticate the watch upon receipt. I'm no expert, and after John Mayer's recent issues I am on heightened alert. I was interested in having the watch authenticated locally at Tourneau or Shreve & Co. I understand that some have issues with buying from these places, but I figured that those two being well-known and official Rolex ADs for sales and service (while not one of the 3 USA RSCs) that it would provide a level of assurance. The seller was uncomfortable with someone opening up the case and scratching it (again, why I recommended those two particular places) and suggested at first to bring the Rolex in for a sizing and that they wouldn't resize it if it were not authentic (which would say nothing as to the parts of/in the movement--issues John Mayer had with "frankenwatches". Next suggestion from the seller that they would only agree to authentication by one of the 3 RSCs in the country.

So my question, with all of that background, is: is it generally considered OK to authenticate, and if so are only the 3 RSCs considered acceptable? Or would Tourneau and/or Shreve & co suffice?

Thanks, as your input/feedback/expertise will help me in future deals I attempt to make.

Thanks!

-Jeff

Welcome.

If the piece is particularly rare then the RSC is the best place to send it. Otherwise an AD or even a Rolex certified indie watchmaker would do.

But I also respect the seller's wish to only have the RSC do the authentication via "quote overhaul costs" method. That way any counterfeit parts will be identified for replacement at the owner's expense.

Welcome Jeff. My view is you should probably buy BNIB from an AD. If you've researched the watch and the seller, it should be good to go. You can always post photos here too and ask for options. RSC service quote is an option, but it's deceitful IMHO.
