Serial number .. please can someone help!

I bought a used Rolex Oyster and I'm trying to work out how old it is. I'm really confused because on the receipt it says the serial number is: 69173/5878539.
I've looked on the various lists online and 69173 seems to make it a very old watch, whereas 5878539 seems a bit earlier. I don't know what to make of it!
Please can someone tell me what on earth these numbers mean, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Annieliz

Welcome to the forum Annieliz.
That doesn't loo like a serial number.

If you look at the dial you will see that between the actual dial and the glass there is a couple of millimetres of metal (the rehaut). Is that metal engraved with "RolexRolexRolex" all the way round it? If it is have a look at the hour 6 area of the. The serial number will be there.

If that rehaut is not engraved (older watches aren't) and you have no paperwork from Rolex the serial number can be seen on the end watch case when the bracelet is removed.

A model 69173 is a Ladies Two tone (bi-metal) Datejust

Serial number 58xxxxx puts it around 1978/79

69173 is the model number. The other number is the machine number or the serial number.
