I wore my Sea Dweller while in Italy. Just like anywhere NYC, London, Paris, you can get robbed if you're not aware of your surroundings.
Don't look like a victim and you won't be a victim. Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings and you'll be left alone. Muggers like an easy target, if you look even remotely like you might put up a fight, they'll move on to an easier mark.

There has been several posts about this on TRF and in fact there was a video posted about the pick-pockets in Naples and their tactics. The video was of a pickpocket, who had turned his ways, and then went undercover to discover this world within Naples. Several of the thefts took place while in close proximity with other people, so you would never feel your wallet being taken or watch.
It seemed that Naples was a hotbed for this kind of crime, so as you are traveling through Naples, i would be mindful. |

Remember...
You can travel all over the world, but you have to go to Italy to Rome. |

People on the forum can tell you what they think and their experience, but it really comes down to how you feel. If you are not concerned about getting mugged, then wear it, if you are worried, leave it home and wear a beater.

If you dress and act like a tourist for sure. Leave the white sneakers at home and you might have a chance blending in. Too often I see American tourists stick out like sore thumbs. |

Any chance we can get an "Is it Safe" forum section? Right next to the "Do you shower with your Rolex Model _______?"

I don't understand all this fear honestly... wear it on your wrist like you'd do with any other watches, what does "flashing" means? like shoving the watch into people's faces, walking with a flashing arrow above it? I can assure you that you'd probably see more people wearing luxury watches in Capri and Amalfi than Cleveland... |

If you don't wear a Rolex in Italy, you'll be the only one not to.

I have been attacked in the street for my watch - A TT sub in the 90s. It was in broad daylight in the middle of large crowds of shoppers and I had to knock the would be thief over to escape. My watch needed a complete new bracelet as it was twisted in the struggle beyond repair. So , albeit very rare it can happen anywhere , anytime. Be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine. Unlike some posts here I do respect you asking and I fully understand. Wearing an expensive watch as a matter of fact does increase your chances of be a target for crime. Anyone who thinks it does not is being naive in the extreme. I would take it , wear it , enjoy it and simply be sensible and the chances are you will be fine.
Enjoy... |

damn reading all these replies makes me feel like I murdered someone making this thread. appreciate the responses for the most part, for example I did not know that about Naples. I guess I've become paranoid, a coworker recently got mugged in Turkey, including his passport and wallet.

I went to the Amalfi coast on a guided tour, it was fun, very beautiful and I felt safe. In one of the towns there were some shady guys lurking around but I kept and eye on them and they never did anything but stare and follow the group.

Went on a similar trip a year ago (Ischia, Capri, Naples, Amalfi, Ravello, Positano) and wore my Pepsi the whole time without anyone caring. Some amazing watch shops in Capri!
But yes, Naples is sadly a pretty terrible city, there is trash piled everywhere and it's really sketchy. Otherwise make sure you rent a little motorboat off the beach in positano, the water is incredible and you can have a romantic time with your partner :) Have fun, and if you are really concerned get your watches insured so you can travel without a second thought! These threads are good imo. If you are going to visit a new place for the first time, why not ask what you can expect.
I think Italy is a real Rolex country, lots of wearers, no problem using a nice watch over there. I've been there many times, it is absolutely safe, just be cautious with people approaching you. There are indeed quite a few scammers and not only at Napoli. They know how to work their charm. I was approached twice at parking area's by the border crossings by shady guys offering me gold jewellery. Be rude and just tell them to .... off and you'll be fine. I have not heard off any tourists getting mugged. |

I've been to Italy many times. You have nothing to worry about. I'm actually a little surprised no Italian WIS types have indignantly chimed in. I'll be in Bormio with my road bike for a week in late August. I'll bring my GMT with me. However, I may need to start a thread inquiring whether or not it is safe to wear my rolex on the Bernina Express from Switzerland though.

Don't take it that way. To those of us that have traveled a bit it's just a strange question. Italy is a charming peaceful first world country filled with some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. America is far more dangerous. People have actually been killed for their watches here. Take the watch you want and have a wonderful time. Let the Italian love for life rub off on you. Ciao.
