Problem with pushers on daytona

Hi Guys:

I have a SS daytona and I find that at times that I have a very difficult time turning the nuts (I don't know what they're called) on the pushers. I've had to use pliers on them. I'm very careful not to over tighten them. I just tighten them until they make contact. Any ideas on how to prevent this?

Thanks,
John

Well first I would stop using pliers as they only need to be finger tight.

If they are worn or stripped then they need to be looked at by someone who can service the watch.

Just use a very tiny amount of Fomblin UT18 on the threads or any silicone type lubricant but only a tiny amount.Unscrew a few times the wipe any excess lube off, then use pushers more and throw away the pliers.

Wow, you should never have to use pliers on them..

Just making contact is proper, they do not do anything except act as a "stop" to keep them from being pushed.

I haven't been using pliers to close them. I screw them down by hand only until they make contact. It's opening them that's the problem. Sometimes it's impossible to open them by hand. I haven't stripped anything. I put a piece of plastic between the watch and the pliers.

I'm going to try the lubricant. Would WD 40 be OK?

no, it would not be. The proper lube would likely be a thin coat of white lithium grease (Fomblin is a trade name), the same as used on the crown threads.

I'll pick up one of those wrenches, just in case the grease doesn't work.

Is that true? So, they don't help with the waterproof rating? I guess, it's so you don't depress the pushers while underwater?

The pushers have been activated by a team of French divers at 30m and pushers unscrewed at 60m with no harm whatsoever. The screw down is just to stop activating the chrono function when not needed.

I would first take it to a watch repair guy just to make sure the threads are not stripped. I'm sure one would look at it for free.

In that case I would rather not have them on there. They are too fiddly. How often do regular chronos get set off by mistake? And so what if they do? It barely effects the power reserve.

I have never had any problems with the pushers. Maybe the lube inside dried up? If you're not over tightening it there maybe something in the threads

Yes, it's true. The lock-nuts have zero function except as a stop point and do not contribute in any way to sealing or water-proofing. The o-ring seals are inside the pusher and a gasket seals it to the case.

Peter why doesn't the YMII pushers screw down? Because yacht racing is far less important than car racing?

Great information. Never thought that I could unscrew the pusher underwater.

The screw down threads are on the outside and are not normally lubed.

WD40 is not a lubricant, it is a penetrant and a water displacer (WD).

It acts as a lubricant at first but it evaporates fairly quickly leaving almost nothing behind, resulting on metal-to-metal contact...
