Cool Peter, he took me for a very cool spin in the training M3, unfortunately wasn't into watches a few years ago so didn't notice his watch:(.

I'm a BMW guy. Always have been. The last of the classic BMWs will be remembered as the e46 and e39 era. BMW did give us the 128i as a throwback to the good old days, a farewell gift to the driving enthusiast. I ordered mine with the 6sp manual, no Nav, no power seats, no nothing. A driver's car. Engine and wheels. I did opt for sat radio. No turbos, no nonsense. It drives like it's on rails.
I hear folks tell me from time to time that I should have gotten the 135 or the 1M. Hell, I could have bought anything. If is wanted an M3, I'd have gotten an M3. The 128i reminded me of the e46 and sometimes you have to buy with your heart. Speed isn't always the be-all and end-all. A little passion goes a long way. That said, with emissions coming down and gas mileage going up, the days of the BMW of old are over. That train has sailed. Remember when BMW used to make only the 3,5,7,z3, and x5? Name the models now. I bet you forget one. Is it too many? Probably. But BMW is out to make money and once in a while they throw a bone to the misty-eyed amount us. It's all we can wish for.

I just swapped my 5 for a 740 and was talking to the dealers and it was interesting that they acknowledged they didn't like it. I think its a win Europe for example where gas is so expensive and urban driving is the norm...here in US...i think the " senior" generation may like them but thats about it.

I'm with you Joe100, not interested in all the mickey-mouse electronic junk for the people who love 'toys', only interested in the basics, front engine, RWD and a 6 speed manual in between.
The previous 3 Series with the four cylinder was clearly underpowered but the new turbo four hopefully provides adequate urge for most highway situations. Indications are that the 2 litre turbo four in the 2 Series Coupe and 3 Series sedan are still "driver's cars" with the manual gearbox.

1999 is long gone and so are the days when an e46 was the best of the best driver's sedans and coupes (for reasonable prices).

I guess the sensible plan is to wait until a new model has been out for 12 months, check all the BMW Forums, and then at least you have some idea what systems are causing problems this time, and you can make a judgement about how good the Model is, and whether you want to take the punt.

My sister had a 1972 2002tii, 4 speed manny tranny, i4 engine...........that was a great car, solid, chrome bumpers, crank windows, crank sunroof, no plastic.
That was a time when men were men, women were women & cars were cars!

Nothing wrong with the 4 banger. Lots of power and great on gas. However make sure you sell it before the warranty is up. BMW's are only good for thinning your wallet after the warranty is gone.

Since this thread rose back up, figured I'd update. I went with the 535xi and am very happy.
