Tom is also slang for jewellery, Tom foolery, so it kind of works.

Agreed. Can you imagine someone on the street complimenting your watch and saying "thank you...its a batman/bruiser/hulk/Kermit/bluesy/etc"....or going into and AD and asking to buy a piece based on its nickname?

The irony is that these nicknames are only used in the one place (the forums) where most people would actually know the reference or model number of most of the watches referenced.

Exactly! The number of Rolex customers who spend any meaningful time on these forums has to be less than 10%. Only a percentage of those use these silly nicknames. If you go to a dealer they don't say "0h! You want to try on a Batman?"

The scrabbling that goes on to be the one to nickname every new model is embarrassing.

Really, the nick names are all just in good fun for US. Don't think if anyone asked about my platinum Daytona I would say yeah it's a 2013 Tom

As far as nicknames lasting down the road....yes I can see them lasting.

Sort of how "Coke" and "Pepsi" has lasted all this time.

Totally agree and IMHO many of them are quite child like after all most that do buy Rolex watches are normally grown up men and women. And I am 100% sure that they would not walk into any AD and ask for a platty ,or batman, bruiser or any of the other childish names. And when asked if someone did notice they was wearing a watch, and asked what watch it was. They would not reply I am wearing a batman, surely the answer would be its a Rolex GMT unless they really was a child like person.

Woah, the curmudgeon factor has really spiked quickly here. I dare someone to start a post with, "In my day..."

Starting to sound like a bunch of Cartier owners.

In the future, to keep things politically correct,we'll be required to hear about the MacPherson, Teletubby, etc...

Do you know that some AD's haven't a clue when you use a nickname for a particular model?? It's fine amongst enthusiast but don't assume everyone knows ... It makes you look unrefined....
