That dude had thief written all over him. His nervous energy was obvious. The sunglasses on inside. The pacing. She went out and invited the knucklehead to come in and steal from her. Not excusing his behavior. But if a trained observer of criminal behavior had been anywhere near there maybe would have been a different outcome.

No insurance company would place a policy for a jewelry shop with open doors

Makes a strong case for having locked doors that customers have to be buzzed in and out of.

That's what the ADs I can think of here have. It also makes me safer when I'm looking around.

Totally agree. Even someone with no criminal training should be able to tell that guy ain't right. I'm all for making a sale, but c'mon.... Sometimes you need to judge a book by it's cover.

Unless you're going into a pawn shop in a less than stellar area, the watch and jewelry stores here in Southern California don't have the man trap / buzz-in style doors you guys are referring to.

As far as being able to profile a thief, my father worked loss prevention for several years. He assumes that everyone is a thief when they walk into the store.

None of the AD's I know in Toronto. Always have a two door buzz system. As it should be.

None of the watch / jewelry stores I've been to here in Southern California have buzz-in or man trap systems.

Truth on this. I live in Socal as well and there are plenty AD's with Giant double doors or more welcoming everyone in.

OMG! He was wearing jean shorts? That right there should have been an indicator to watch him close.

I visited the Naples, Italy Rolex dealer once. They locked me inside after I was buzzed in. I was like, "damn, I'm going back on the ship after this."

If you ever get to Toronto, you need to stop in at Humbertown Jewelers for the experience of being locked in. LOL I was a bit unnerved by it myself.
They have 2 security guards as well.

Luckily no bodily had to the manager. Fairly good description of him. Police should be able to find this culprit.
The world is a better place with these characters locked up.

Most jewelry / luxury watch stores have at least one armed guard right next to the entrance. I think this is pretty much an insurance requirement now.

Even without man traps, if you pay attention when you're in a high end boutique, you'll pick up on the the security techniques.

e.g. I was at Vacheron on Rodeo Drive and asked to see a watch. The doors were wide open when I walked in, but as the salesperson went to the case to pull out the watch, the guy at the door subtly closed the doors.

Or a lot of times, if you ask to see a watch, the salesperson will offer you a drink and ask you to take seat at one of the tables and (s)he will bring the watch over. This gets you deeper into the store, physically, and also gets you settled into a fixed location so it's more of a chore to up and run.

I suspect our response to the theft might be a little more "aggressive" than in the UK. Many stores in the California and the USA in general are well armed with firearms. Lots of people with concealed weapons permits are willing to lend a hand too.

That store is not set up to sell Rolex, hence double doors wide open near the mall entrance. They normally sell skagen, fossil, ice, citizen etc.

Would be interesting to hear how they came to have a DSSD in the window to begin with.

Closing the doors after is a std response in phys sec. You want to teach staff to protect the store. This prevents the problem of someone stealing one thing, then everyone is distracted and then an accomplice makes off with more, the till for example or more valuable items.
