Alibaba
Any thoughts on to what extent Rolex will be policing the new kid on the block for brand abuse? I spent about 5 minutes on the site searching "Rolex" and there is ample use of the Rolex name for non-Rolex products and a host of "look-a-like" watch listings using the Rolex name.
Alibaba is rumored to want to gain a foothold in North America (countering Amazon and ebay). I can't imagine any legitimate attempt to get there without some brand/copyright protection which I also don't see happening with the open counterfeit trade activity that permeates China where Alibaba is based. What if they use some of that capital to buy a North American based web retailer to start competing against Amazon and ebay? Luxury retailers have to be cringing at the thought of battling this down the road. |

From what I understand anything with the name Rolex or a Rolex trademark can only be imported by Rolex U.S.A. Any other importer bringing in items with the Rolex name or trademark can and will be seized by customs.

Baba has more fakes than ebay. One of its many problems that speculators - oops, investors - are overlooking.

Why's that? I think a huge retailer domiciled within the largest country in the world will have some type of impact on the general marketplace. Maybe not now but most assuredly down the road. One of the best things about the Rolex brand is the integrity factor and having a retailer the size of Alibaba primed to proliferate the tainting of all luxury brands merits dialogue and consideration.

If I ever decide to start a scheme of running knockoff junk on canal street then I will probably be doing business with alibaba....but since thats not going to happen I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
Fake BS is always going to be around. Let law enforcement handle that. I for one am willing to call out anyone wearing anything fake. Just me doing my part |
