Advise on selling collectibles or not
Hey so I've been thinking and I realized that I could sell off a lot of my assets to get my first Rolex. I happen to be a huge Star Wars nerd and have several limited and even signature edition Star Wars prop replicas (and 1 James Bond prop replica), made by Master Replicas and eFX (for those who know what they are), that I could collectively get quite a few thousand for. A part of me really wants to do this because Rolex is much more of a "big boy toy" in comparison, the only problem is I still love these lightsabers and helmets and I know if I sell them they will be incredibly difficult to reacquire later inline due to their highly limited nature, versus a Rolex which is pretty much always available in vast numbers. Any opinions out there on what I should do?

If there is a possibility of you still getting your Rolex by giving it a little more time and saving, I would say wait a little while and not sell any of your collectibles. If there is no way you will be able to get a Rolex without selling them then I say go for it. Sell the minimum amount to help you get your Rolex. Wear it and enjoy it for the rest of your life. As much as you love your collectibles, I think you'll love your Rolex much more. To most of us here it is the ultimate collectible

I wouldn't sell any of those things...not only do they clearly have sentimental value to you but they would be much harder to replace. It would be one thing if these were random collectibles you stumbled across in an attic that were valuable but you didn't care about them...these are clearly important to you.
I doubt you will regret waiting a year or two more to buy a watch but I bet someday you would greatly regret letting some of those rare pieces go. I am sure this will sound like blasphemy to many here...Rolexes are nice, but they are just watches. Most of them aren't collectible at all as they are widely available all over the world and have been for decades. |

Keep the stuff you really love, sell the rest.
Get what you want when you can afford it. |

Not sure about the reacquisition of your Star Wars stuff, but as a comic/comic art collector, I would... At least the comics I would, as I know I can reacquire them again. My (and all Comic art) is all one of a kind, so I would be more weary of selling them.
Hope this helps... Btw, the SS/PT Yachty is an AWESOME watch! |

Maybe it's because I've moved so much in my life (30 moves in my 52 years) and because I've lost everything I owned (tornado), but I find stuff is just stuff. It's great for the time, but when you want other stuff, the current stuff is just stuff. Do some soul searching. What of these things are important to you? And by that I mean, do you touch it, see it, enjoy it daily? If not, it's just stuff; if so, it's important to you. Keep what is important, sell/donate what isn't.

Would depend on if you actually use/interact with the items collected or if they are never or hardly ever touched and just preserved. If not used I would sell them to get a Rolex, a wonderful piece of art that can be used daily.

Well the whole point of my collection is that everything is in a display case and therefore really not touched. I guess you could compare my feelings towards everything as like fine art that took me a lot of investing in both time and money to acquire, but in terms of actual use they literally just sit there though I try to admire everything every day.

There is a simple way. Hide all your collectibles in a cupboard. Set a reminder for 6 months time. If by then you've forgotten about them. Sell and buy the rolex. If you still miss them and want to look at them even once a week after 6 months get them out an display them again.

Hang on to the Star Wars goodies until the next movie is released, then sell if you really want to.

I would hang on to your collection till you are ready to get the exact watch you want, not a replacement in the meantime. If you truly desired an Air King or Oyster Perpetual, I would advise differently. However...if you want something to tide you over, there are plenty of manufacturers out there that make homage watches, Steinhart comes to mind. Longines is a good, reasonable brand.
Good luck...:-) |

I did sell once a for me precious collection, never looked back, no regrets.
If you can do this without looking back and getting remorse than sell your Star Wars stuff. A fine time piece is after all something you use and enjoy daily and might arguable be more rewarding.
