Reducing price paid at AD

It seems to me that if your local AD is happy to send you on your way with a shiny new watch on your wrist after swiping your card for full MSRP, then they should be equally happy knocking off the 3-4% credit card fee if you pay in cash/wire, etc. Has anybody had any experience with this?

Also, has anybody been able to buy from an out of state AD and have the watch shipped to you home, avoiding sales tax. Alternatively could one avoid state sales tax having it shipped to a friend in another state? My state's sales tax is 6% so it is not insignificant.

Paying cash helped, but being in Australia, the out is state sales tax aspect wasn't applicable to me.

We have homes in two states, and on any major purchase, businesses are willing to "ship" to our other home.

You should expect more than 3%-4% discount. I wouldn't buy any new watch without first talking to Patrick (OCROLEXGUY), DAVIDSW, or other trusted sellers here on TRF.

Absolutely true. And I get a nice discount. Partly because I am not running all over their hometown, or anywhere else for that matter, discussing the specifics of our deals.

And for what it is worth you are supposed to be disclosing these transactions on your federal income tax return. Along with all internet purchases.

Why would the federal government care about state taxes? Your home state, yes, but why would this ever go on a federal return?

I will have to pull my return and look at it. I am certain it was an IRS form. The form may filter to the states and if your state has no use tax, then you pay no tax. But if it does you are supposed to pay the tax. I am almost certain it was not a state of Illinois form. Illinois does have a Form ST-44 that is meant to collect the tax and I believe 44 or so other states have a similar use tax. But this form does not look familiar. Maybe a CPA or EA will chime in before I can dig up my tax returns.

Yes to shipping out of state to save tax. Very common, I think. And you can negotiate for free shipping.
My AD does not seem to "get it" when it comes to discount for cash. I think that Rolex is looking over their shoulder, making sure each sale meets their price requirement. So I used my AMEX to get my own rebate.

It all depends on which model you are talking about. Good luck getting any discount on a stainless steel Daytona from AD... Much many other ss models I think 10% and no tax is a fair deal.

You are absolutely correct about use taxes at the State level, and many people do not realize they are supposed to do this when they make out of state purchases or internet purchases where state taxes are not charged. Hence the lawsuits against Amazon to get them to collect the state tax. Just don't think this has anything to do with the IRS. Sorry for being pedantic.

You forgot that you have to homeschool your children or pay thousands of dollars per kid for private schools.

I just think that with the wasteful spending people get all fired up, and rightly so. Especially in Illinois. However like most people I am willing to pay my fair share. Just not everyone else's share.

Of course the whole argument is specious. It's not potholes and 911 that is crowding out tax money for worthy services. It's public pensions and platinum health care plans that cost nothing to the recipient that are killing state and local government budgets. We pay pretty close to 50% in taxes and yet our public schools are garbage so we have to pay an additional 40k for each kid to attend school.

I love Chicago but no way I am moving back until that slow motion car crash is fixed. NYC is no better except it has deeper pockets to pick.

As it has been said before. The AD experience is over rated when it come to the exchange of funds. Cash in my pocket is king. I don't mind looking at the AD's watches and trying to negotiate. If that doesn't work, use a trusted seller. I have no problem, where I live getting good discounts from dealers. Our tax is 13% and you can get at least that. On gold watches up to 27% off. Plus the FedEx package is worth the wait.
