I agree, this year`s Basel was anything but good for us mortals.Except of the new Day-Date(perhaps the most beautiful Rolex in years) I don`t even like the other new models, and I REALLY don`t like their prices.
But I actually saw something good and made by Rolex in this year`s Baselworld! It`s new Tudor Iconaut, perhaps too sporty, but good looking watch with both chronograph and GMT function.

OK, won't mention this again, but I am at a loss as to some of Rolex's recent design decisions.

the Models Lost something
These new models lost some of the charachter Rolex was built on. I agree with JJ and aside from the YG DD, nothing is a WOW for me.

I am not averse to change or new ideas... but when it comes to the things that I actually care about, watches being one of them, I simply just like what I like. I like the current Rolex range... and I am getting to know the brand and its stable very well here on TRF... The recent offerings from Basel, except the SDD, have yet to smile at me. The SDD is a 'tool' watch of note... and I respect its place in the world, and I am starting to feel a little warm and fuzzy inside from the SDD's little smirk across the room..!!!! :-) Hmmmmm..... I think it may just be a little catchy here on TRF in the near future......

I agree with you. I think the DS will have a cult following of sorts. I guess I will need to decide whether I want to be part of such a nefarious group.

JJ you are right on. I can't believe the new models. They are terrible!
There is no one anywhere that will ever convince me that the original SD's & Subs ever NEED to be replaced. I'm afraid next year they will finally end the tool watch era by changing the "classic" Submariner to something similar to this years model. I do want to say thanks to Rolex for saving me tons of $$$$$$!!

isn't it a good thing that we all disagree
if we were unanimous in our intense like or desire to acquire all the new intros... Rolex would be blamed for creating a class of new 'daytonas' - watches with ridiculous wait times or premiums. The GV comes to mind.
i also agree 41mm is great, 36mm is now position more for women (hence the crazy diamond dials) ... seems like Rolex is listening to us and following the trend towards larger watches. I would now actually consider buying a dd. Only thing that really bothers me is the weak dollar and sky high prices but just a few years ago. |

Well I guess it is always like this, new watches and change will arrise all sorts of feelings, I agree that the abyss dweller is to damn profesional to be used in the way it is capable of... unless they know something we do not and some elite military divers are doing deep sea operations at what was it?... a zillion meters under water???? I mean please I need someone here to tell me was this something that profesional divers needed????
In regards of that WG Sub... well, as stated before some will like it and some will hate it...here it goes... I like it! NOt a tool watch but I don't think I would buy or wear a Solid Yellow Gold Sub, TT is as far as I go but White Gold...that I like, you have the weight of those WG Daytonas, the classy design of the sub, and a new blue...If I had the $$$ I would probably buy it, altough definetively not for diving!!!!! But I think next year we will see those pepsi/coke GMTII C's as well as the revamped Subs and SD's, and we will be happy once again... probably... becasue that will happen afther anther hefty price increase!!!! That only means we have to save some coin, cut expenses, stay overtime, get an extra job, sell something so next year we can acquire those new Rollies!!!!

Well said JJ
Too bad Rolex will never do what we want! They will always do what THEY want. It is amazing how many companies these days DON'T listen to their customers. Instead of making something the customer wants, they make a product THEY want and then convince the customer they need it.
