Explorer II without question. My favorite of my watches, tough as nails and I've never been afraid to wear it, ever.

Really if it were me, I think I'd go with the ceramic bezel Sub. I don't think it would mater with or without date. The ceramic is tough as nails.

Explorer 1 on a black rubber b :)
Explorer as for me its as iconic as a Sub, the '1' at 39mm sits slightly smaller & lower so less to catch & rubber b straps can be seen as 'consumables' keeping the bracelet nice :) Think I've just talked myself into one also!!! |

X2 Personally for the needs you describe I would go with the 40mm 16570. It has all the features of the larger 216570 but is more discrete, sits slightly lower on the wrist, bracelet can be more easily adjusted and can be found for less money.

"value-for-money, tough as old boots and relatively discreet" --> Explorer
"going off on a travel job" --> Explorer 2 |

Why mess up a Rolex. I'd stick with the citizen..

Hard to go wrong with Adam's advice. This watch is probably the most useful watch Rolex/Tudor makes for the price. |

My 1601, tough watch, it's 40 years old give and take but it can take a beating, I wor it then passed it to my brother then my wife used it. Yes my wife used it for a year and it is still working well.

Explorer II 42mm is the best choice for a traveler! I would also go with the THC previously mentioned, especially since it has the capability of showing 2 time zones (unlike the Daytona)

I would suggest an Explorer II, Seadweller, or Submariner. All can be had for solid money and look awesome on a strap or bracelet. |

My bet would be on the 216570 with its Paraflex shock absorbers.
