I don't wear a dress so all my watches must be sports models.

X2

The Oyster's are truly casual watches including DDII's and the Celllini truly dress watches. As for which of the Oyster Collection are designed purely for sports I don't see that...They do make great functional, durable watches that are well suited for work or play though. The Oyster's look good in shorts, jeans and yes even a suit/sports coat. I don't think they need to be purely designated as sports watches or Rolex would have named them as such.

Both elements need to be there.

I can think of only 2 Rolex models that were specifically designed with any form of competition (sport) in mind. The Daytona (motorsports) and the Yachtmaster 2 (boat racing). Applying the term "sports watch" to other models is a mis-application due to using the term "sports" so loosely it renders it virtually meaningless, which is why it seems to be confusing to some. If definitions didn't matter, nobody would have come up with a special words (like "Sport") to describe things in the first place.
So which sport does one play with a sport coat on?

Shooting grouse and other wild fowl, as well as rabbits and other game. This is a definition of sport that hasn't been covered thus far.

Well, you know, tweed sports jacket. The type with reinforced elbow patches for bending the arms every time a grouse or whatever flies overhead. Some have patches on one shoulder too, for the shotgun stock. Sorry...getting into forbidden TRF territory here. In any case, tweed outfitting calls for a pocket watch!

If you can wear in the shower, it is a sport watch :)

Fishing as well.

People who do these things are called "sportsmen" (or "sportswomen")...

Some have useful complications designed to be used in conjuntion with certain sports like has been previously mentioned. As for the precious metals thing, I don't see why that disqualifies its capability. Tom races with his Platona, others here I'm sure have been diving with the Smurf or other gold Sub, and I wouldn't hesitate either. I also insure my watches. To the OP, why is this so important?

Not important in the slightest

Just curious about the seemingly indiscriminate use of "sports" with reference to Rolex.

It would appear that "sport" takes place in the shower and so a Rolex must be able to be worn there to qualify ;-)

It's mainly just hand-waving. A sports watch is one that looks rugged and isn't particularly dressy.

Any watch that is worn by an athlete using it in sports action in the ad. Then you know the lawyers have vetted it for sports use.

Rolex defined "skin-diving" as a sport when the Sub first came out.
