SOTC and a polite request for advice

About 30 watches have passed through my hands in the last 2 – 3 years, including no date Subs, an Explorer II, several Seamaster Profs, a DeVille, a Moonwatch, various Seikos including Orange Monsters, SKX007, Seiko 5s, Pulsars, Casios, and a CWC.

While there are still many more watches I’d like to try, I’ve realized that my preference is for a small set of watches - each with a specific purpose - rather than a larger collection. I’ve settled for now on the 3 below as my dressy watch, my smart casual watch, and my beater, and I think 3 is my realistic maximum.

First up is my dress / office watch, the 36mm Rolex DateJust 116234 with silver stick dial. This is my favourite watch and for sentimental reasons is a keeper. It is my most comfortable watch, and versatile enough to wear with a suit or with jeans and t-shirt. If I had to go down to one watch, this would be the one.

Second is the ceramic Submariner Date 116610LN. This was my everyday watch before the DateJust arrived, but is now my designated casual or weekend watch.

Third up is my beater, the Casio G-SHOCK GW-M5610-1ER. Solar and atomic so always works and always accurate, practical to wear during exercise (and I have used it to time laps) and on holiday, but cheap and ugly enough that I don’t really care if it gets scraped or damaged.

I find that I am not wearing the Submariner much now. As I don’t have a winder (and don’t think I want one) the Submariner is wound down when the weekend comes, so I just wear the DateJust. When I don’t wear the DateJust I tend to jump straight to the G-SHOCK. The Submariner is a lot of money to hardly ever wear, and when I do wear it - having got used to the DateJust - I now find it sits high on the wrist and if I am honest the case and lugs have always been a little too large for my liking.

My thoughts now revolve around the following options:
  1. Go down to 2 watches - sell the Submariner and keep the DateJust and G-SHOCK;
  2. Go down to 2 watches - sell the Submariner and G-SHOCK, keep the DateJust, and buy a nicer / more versatile quartz ‘beater’ like an Aerospace or AquaRacer or SMPQ.
  3. Change the 3 watches - keep the DateJust and G-SHOCK, but get a different (and slightly smaller) weekend watch with date – maybe a vintage GMT-Master.
  4. Change the 3 watches - keep the DateJust and G-SHOCK - but get a no date casual watch for the weekend – e.g. a Moonwatch or Explorer 1 or Sub 14060M.

I don’t think I’d be happy with just a DateJust and a G-SHOCK – I’d like a ‘spare’ nice watch for when the DateJust goes to the spa. I’ve had a Moonwatch before and found that like the ceramic Sub it is just a bit too big for me and the absence of date bothered me. I prefer the smooth sweep of an automatic but like the convenience of quartz.

Nice collection already, if you need to sell sub, I will get a GMT as the next purchase.

From your description, I am going to suggest Option 4...and go with the EXPI 39mm. Should ride and feel just right based on your thoughts of the subc.

I don't think the sale of the G-Shock will add material funds in this equation.

You are conflicted about the current situation and I don't think the 4 choices you outlined are going to resolve that fully.

Of those options I like #3 the best - leaning on a Vintage gives you a nice option.

And if you don't have a philosophical objection - get a winder to eliminate the chore of setting dates when one isn't worn for more than a few days.

Keep the sub and DJ, they're a killer combo. It's not difficult to set the time on a sub, if it's the date setting that bothers you trade it for a 114060?

I wouldn't change a thing for at least 6 months. Then see if you've worn the SubC much.

I think you have all the bases covered. I won't sell any of them.
The only addition I'd suggest is something on a leather strap a JLC perhaps

My collection is pretty similar

What about a gmt 2c on a super jubilee? Swap that for your sub. I have a feeling you'll like the combo.

I had a similar problem with my Daytona and DJII. Any situation I'd wear the DJII, I'd pick the Daytona over it.

Sold the DJII and got BBB; ended up somewhat similar situation.

I ended up getting a Reverso. It is very different, and they both serve different functions. I love the slim reverso for work, and the Daytona is awesome at night and on the weekends.

Go for diversity!

I'd just hold on for a bit and see if your mind changes. No need to do anything unless you have to. The Sub isn't going away.

Option four. Add a no date sub, explorer or Daytona. Much easier to set the time when you get around to wearing it.

May I suggest from a purist point of view: Get a GW-5000 and and Explorer 1. The former relates to the origin of G Shock and the later relates to the origin of ROLEX Professional Watches. For the Date Just, since it it sentimental to you, clean in up and keep it a safe. This what I do for some of my sentimental pieces.

If sticking to Rolex sport watches, then either the Daytona or the Explorer, the former if you want a chrono smaller, dressier and equally sporty than the Speedmaster, the latter for pure beach-to-boardroom goodness.

However, if you want to go explore sport watches from other brands, then apart from the good suggestions from the others so far, may I suggest the IWC Ingenieur 3239. Sure it "only" has an ETA movement, but that's good in some ways as it means your DJ remains the crown in your collection. The Ingenieur is small (40mm), thin (10mm), antimagnetic, 70s Gerald Genta DNA, got a date, sporty and dressy like your DJ but aesthetically contrasts nicely in every aspect otherwise. Of course I am biased because that is exactly the watch I want in my collection to represent IWC one day.
