Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can put me in the right direction for a rough price point and package (what is a complete package) for a datejust or similarly priced men's watch. The prices I see are all over the place ranging from $2200 to $6k for this watch. I don't know what makes one more valuable than the other. Have been looking for a month now as a gift for my lady I'm open to buying pre-owned but really want a LNIB example if I do that. I am in Los Angeles if anyone has any suggestions locally. I was really hoping to get it done around $3k and have had a few offers for watches at that price with box and paperwork (although I don't know what all should be in the paperwork). What are the most important things to look for? Thanks for any help?

The older the watch, the lower the price..

If you are looking at 3k you will be looking at watches from the 60's-70's. You will not likely find LNIB examples.

You should talk to ocrolexguy one of trf trusted sellers. He might have something for you.
Bob's watch is in Orange county as well.

A lot of the watches sold on this forum have been polished and will look like new, especially if they have been serviced. I have an Airking from 1960 which was recently serviced by rolex and the watch came back literally looking like new. The whole watch was polished for the first Time, the dial,crown and Hands were replaced.

You can definitely get a datejust steel and gold for 3k in near mint condition, probably from the 90's with box and papers.

Thanks. I did find one that has box/papers and looks to be in pretty great shape. I believe its a late 90's datejust ss band w/salmon dial. Is that a decent deal or should I keep shopping for sts/gold?

I've looked at the seller's watches that you've mentioned and they appear to be quite a bit over the prices I am seeing elsewhere. I am new to rolexes but not to high end collecting. I understand the value of buying from a knowledgable and trusted seller, however, when the prices rival those of NIB examples I don't know if it still makes sense. Can any of you possibly show me a few viable purchase options from a non-dealer bust trusted forum members for a two tone datejust or similar model? Ideally I'd like to go with rose gold and STS if possible (it's a gift for the lady) - like to have factory box and paperwork as well.

I'm a huge Colt collector and own some very rare and high dollar revolvers. As such, I get the intricacies of needing to know what to look for and how to spot issues that a novice eye would miss. What I would like to do is work a local cash deal with a private seller that you all can endorse in some form. I know on the colt forum I can name dozens of guys that are GTG with any of their sales. Hoping to run into similar luck here. Thanks again for any help.

You are in a hurry to pay as little as possible for one of the most commonly faked watches in the world? Let us know how that goes.

Seriously, a good condition Rolex with box and papers from a reputable source will not be cheap.

You'll either have to pay the market price or lower your expectations.

Look for trusted sellers here, and look on chrono24 for an idea of what you can get for your money.

I'm just trying to understand the market better sir, no one is in a hurry. I'd like to qualify whether it is necessary to buy preowned from a dealer who is simply going to mark the watch up 30% or so. Conversely, if there are a few key things to look out for, I can theoretically have the seller meet me at an authorized dealer and verify the watch it seems. I say all of this because my concern would be immediately being upside down in the watch. I will happily plunk down whatever it takes but I like my assets readily liquifiable. Otherwise it seems like an unadvisable purchase. Would you agree?

Let's say I buy a preowned watch from a "trusted retailer" for $6k and no one will look at it for over $4k on regular market resale (which seems to be the case on a few of these) I would argue that I made a bad buy. That's all I am trying to wrap my head around. Like my colts on which I'll happily spend tens of thousands because I know the market, I want to be "in good" on this watch as I'm sure it will not be my last. If I'm missing the broader picture please feel free to educate me as I truly know nothing of the market.

OK, you are thinking correctly...now all you've got to do is the research to see what similarly aged and condition pieces are going for on the secondary market...use our classifieds, Time Zone, Watch Recon to name a few. Once you have the number in your mind that the watch is worth, then look for examples in the price range you won't get beat up on if you have to flip it. Good luck,

Agree with above posts. Go to Chrono24 and some of the other sales sites to get a general sense for the prices and what you get for those prices. Then contact one of our trusted sellers and see if you can come to terms.

Remember, you may pay a bit more to a trusted seller on this site, but you are buying a reputation as well as the watch. Put differently, you may find cheaper elsewhere, but the risks skyrocket.

DJ come in so many variation, SS, TT, oyster bracelet, jubilee, roman dials, Arabic, stick, etc... there's also DJ and DJ II's.

First decide what you want, exactly, then shop.

If you want to spend $3,500 to $4,000 there's millions of options..

Watch is described as being "in excellent condition or better". Last service unknown but "keeps very accurate time" according to seller. Since I know him from other endeavors he said he would 100% take it back if I'm not happy.

Are you strictly limiting yourself to $3,000? I have seen a few 21st century era DJs on here going for around $3,400. All trusted sellers with prior servicing information readily available

No, not at all. I'd spend twice that or more if I knew I would not be upside down in it directly after purchasing. I know this seller and am not worried about the trust aspect in this particular case.

Bought the salmon dial DJ. It was absolutely stunning and looked like a new watch. Local dealer said he would have had a hard time knowing it was a used watch if not for the box being worn a bit. Thx for all the input, the lady was over the moon.
