All this talk of patina begs the question.....
what did a brand new 1964 5513, 1970 5513, 1971 1665, or 1969 1675, etc etc etc look like the day it was made .... does anyone have any good quality original photos to share?

I'll have a dig around. I saw a 1967 rolex sales brochure in my watch guys shop recently and the lume on the sports models were not white. Almost a green tinge similar to how they seem now if in good condition. Sure it wasn't just the colours in the pics ageing as the rest of the paper showed normal white. To think they were bright white from day 1 is incorrect.

some very interesting replies ( some not so!) fascinating to see the 1675 picture, there must be more factory-fresh images out there?
They would really provide the patina, lugs, insert etc debates with some much needed perspective. |

Yeah, sorry OP - got side-tracked.
You saw the 1665 I posted, right? I'd think that's a fairly close time-capsule. Are you chasing after a NOS watch, then? Or just curious? |

Unless the photos were taken in the 60s/70s, you're going to find it tough to get a totally accurate image now. Those old brochures are probably your best available depiction.
Here some other NOS watches, but obviously have attained that lovely patina, which wasn't there initially, which I think is awesome in every way. Omani Khanjar 1665 (photo thetimetraveler.co/jed) |

I think the service dials look great...whether they harm the value or not, they look fantastic.
