I'm not a fan of the nicknames. I find even Hulk and Smurf a bit silly, but if others want to use them, I'm ok with that.

The silly names attributed to the new RG YM have gone a way to putting me off buying one (Charlie Murphy and Duracell, FGS!). Quite why anyone would want to name an achingly beautiful watch after a comedian or a cheap battery is beyond me

And Batman? Is this nickname not referring to the blue and black colour of the bezel?

b/c they go with booze.

i wanted to name the Hulk the Peyote but it didn't catch on...

Doesn't really answer my question.

This poses the question who decides what is a good or bad nickname?

A person should be able to reference their watch by nickname if they choose to and not worry that their use of the nickname is distasteful."

The old nicknames were cool, they weren't based on superheroes and they weren't created by people in a forum thread. Maybe rolex has something to do with it by making watches with different colours then they used to but I have a feeling if the "Pepsi" was introduced today the forum would want to call it the "Spider-Man".. Hmm
Don't be too certain nicknames were not created on forums. Maybe not TRF, but maybe another. It is arguable if the older nicknames are cool. C'mon, they are named after soft drinks for crying out loud.

In the end, call it whatever you want. And if others have a problem with the nickname, then it is their problem and they should keep their negative opinions to themselves.

The new nicknames are silly and childish. Superheroes? Come on.

Even some of the vintage ones make no sense. A good example is the Steve McQueen Explorer. He never wore one near as we can tell and the 1655 reference number does the same job.

Here is another point: if everyone used the correct reference numbers, it'd make searching the forum easier. Searching the reference would return better results, especially for those of us who use the search function regularly. I was looking for blnr photos the other day and had to do 5 or 6 searches for the reference and nicknames to get all the content.

There was a natural sort of feeling to the process in the past, the gmt's had fun nicknames and a few others even if they had no relevance like with the "Steve McQueen". Not every watch had one, there was no need. Why people feel the need to make one up for every new watch they release is beyond me, it's not natural anymore, the process of natural selection or whatever you want to call it, is gone, replaced with a vote on a forum thread, the few people who seem to care and vote also seem to really like superheroes I guess

Since I am no longer 9 years old, super hero comics is not my thing. My wife and family are my superhero. Maybe I should name my watches after them.
