To be honest I would also having trouble to keep a watch like DD, DD2, Platona on my winder and wear something else. I do rotate but there is always 1 watch that I like the most (blnr). That’s why I have my collection down to 4 now and it will probably go to 2.

Love the meteorite dial on the DD. For some reason it never sang to me on the Daytona, but I just discovered it on the DD a few weeks ago and definitely love it. No shame in wearing one watch if it's that nice. Or just wait a few years/months and I'm sure something will come calling.

I can't say enough about your DD, it is gorgeous. Unfortunately, I am addicted to variety, as are many TRFs.

Having acquired the 118238, the use of my other watches have been severely reduced. Even to the point of being kept in the safe for extended periods of time. I don't think I can ever be a one-watch guy, but at the same time, I don't think I need to be a 10 watch (this was the most I have had at one time) either. In any event, my plan is to wait it out and see if I am still on my honeymoon phase with my 118238 before making any furhter decisions to downsize my collection. In all honesty, I can see myself being a 3 watch guy. Just need to decide which 3 watches. Great post and love the OP's DD.

Thanks for the comments and shared experiences! This has clearly struck a chord with many. A few responses to various comments:
My comment related to the cost of a watch on the winder was not about leaving the DD unworn to attend to other watches... just the opposite! I so enjoyed wearing the DD that I felt bad that the Smurf, GMT, DJ, others simply sat in the winder for months at a time. I would take off the DD occasionally and wear another watch because I felt like I "should" rather than because I really wanted to. omitohud asked if it could be the size. I think there's an element to that, but I have owned 36mm watches in the past (and still have a 36mm Datejust) that never captivated me like the DD. I have decided, after owning two now, that I'm not a fan of the maxi-cased sport series (Sub, GMT, SD4000, etc). I really prefer the lines of the older style case... it's mainly the big contrast between lug width and bracelet width that bothers me. Final note on size... the thing I love most about DDs in general is the President bracelet. I think one of the reasons I love the 36mm size and never warmed up to the DDII is that with an average sized wrist, the 36mm DD lets you see more of the President band on either side of the watch head when it's on your wrist. As to the Platona... It's the only watch I've seen that I'm truly drawn to. I don't really even care that it's platinum (although I do like precious metals), but I love the brown ceramic and light blue dial contrast. I'm trying to figure out a way to decide if I'll really wear it and the DD regularly before I drop $50k-$55k on a watch that will be difficult to re-sell if my assumptions prove false. I'm pretty sure I'll love it, but there's not a large secondary market for $50k+ watches. :-) Thanks again for the discussion TRFers, I'm enjoying it. Bob |

First of all...great post. I understand exactly where you are coming from. I don't think i could do it but i tend to wear a watch for an extended period of time and then switch. I got an SAS Polar Exp II in Aug and it dominated my wrist up until a few weeks ago. I have been wearing my 18238 Lapis DD since.
The DD is a great choice as an all around watch. The Phillips auction and catalogue really made think about the Day Date in a new light. It is such a versatile great watch even though its not a "tool" watch or a "sport" watch. It can go anywhere a GMT, Daytona, Exp II can go. It just goes differently. The bracelet wears differently but beautifully. The feeling it conveys when you wear it just different than any other watch. I can't explain it but it does. I am now missing my Platinum one. In the meantime my PP's have gotten very little wrist time in about a year. Go figure.... |

I am pretty new to TRF and am enjoying it.
Hi! All. I can relate to the OP's views, as well as another who stated that he could have one very special watch in place of a collection - but which watch or watches to get / keep when "trimming down"? Perhaps it is "An older-person thing", this "Less (fewer) is More" philosophy. I am "older" - 60 - and am wracked by psoriatic arthritis. I am not doing as well as Phil Mikelson is doing with his. I am resolving to enjoy life, albeit with accommodations, by choosing possessions, experiences and people with some care. I have collected too many of too many things in my life, and now I find them largely burdensome. I am in the process of liquidating my collections of cars, tools, toy trains and "Pb linear accelerators" (which I hope is a TRF Rules-compliant term), etc.. The Day-Date chosen by the OP is, as stated, magnificent, and would be an excellent choice alone or in a smaller collection. Thirty-three years ago, I wanted a YG DD with silver dial I had seen to commemorate my Doctorate. It was $8,200 at the time, and my parents said,"No". I was not astonished. But, I am sure that, if I had received that as a graduation gift, I would still have and treasure it. I now contemplate buying such a watch for myself, free from worry about depreciation or what people think. There are advantages to being "older". And what is the right number of watches to own? Different number for different people. I do not yet know if I am a "One-Watch Guy", but sometimes I do like to know what time it is, much more so than when I was still working . . .
