This or that (Patek and Lange content)
Functional elegance (PP) vs romantic beauty (ALS)..
The Patek 3940 was produced for a long time, yet isn't so easy to find on the market, while the Lange 1815 MP being an LE is rare and even harder to come by. What is your choice? Help a brother decide.. |

Lange – no contest, even though the 4 and 8 are missing.
The PP is not functional elegance, there's nothing elegant about that dial – that's the ALS. The romantic beauty is the PP, because of the name attached to an otherwise messy layout. Then again, you're comparing a PC to a mere moonphase – if you want a PC that's functionally elegant, it's got to be the Glashutte Original. |

Tough one. That Lange is a stunner and very hard to find. Though I think I prefer the moon phase of the Grande Lange 1 more. And if I was going 1815 I'd go for the chrono - unbeatable. But the moon phase is still a winner.
The Patek I'm of two minds on. Its a PP Perpetual and should have held value better than it has. I find the dial layout to be a just about perfect, but it's a small watch - 36mm but because of the case shape it felt even smaller on me. I couldn't get it to sit comfortably on me either. Perpetuals contain a lot of information and I find a larger dial tends to suit the complication better. The case itself is very sensuous drawn and frankly outshines the Lange case by a fair margin. For a Patek PC it's a good buy. Like them both, but don't love one of them... |

I vote Lange, but I think both make better moonphase references than the two posted (ie PP 5205 and Lange 1).

I'd vote patek. Don't get me wrong, the lange is beautiful, but I think the 3940 is perfectly proportioned, and might be the best looking watch you can buy. Aside from a perpetual calendar chrono like the 5970, the 3940, to me, is as good as it gets

2 very different pieces. But the Lange takes it with the beautiful and unique dial.

I'm too lazy to go look right now, but is there a size difference? Right now the PP gets my vote.

I'm far from a Patek fanboy, but the 3940 is IMO the quintessential modern perpetual calendar.

Between the two - 3940.
Not a fan of the guilloche on the MP. I think the 1815 Up/Down is more balanced. |
