New Tudor NATO strap

No big deal but I just saw the new NATO strap included with the Black Bay and it looks very nice. Even better than the old one which was quite nice as well. Very nice details.

The thing that gets me about many of the very nice, manufacturer NATOs from various brands is that, while the buckles look very nice, they often have a spring bar in them, which means another point of failure. The tang should be attached to a single piece buckle, or it kind of defeats the purpose.

looks nice. It would be nice to see one on a watch before I say I wish mine came with one. I bought many aftermarket NATOs and will be using these as I am not a fan of removing the spring bars so often.

It does look nice. I think they'll be selling off all the old stock before introducing new ones with new watches.

One questions...what does the term, NATO, mean or refer to?

Military requisition order forms had NTO [or something similar] on the paperwork when purchasing government issue nylon straps and so NATO evolved into the nickname. Has nothing to do with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

I stand corrected:
The strap that collectors call "NATO" (not to be confused with the Rhino, Waterborne, or Maratec Zulu straps) is based upon the standard watch strap issued by the British Ministry of Defense (MOD). Called the "G10" by members of the British military because of the form used to requisition the strap (and other items) from inventory, the reason it got its "NATO" name is because the strap has a NSN or NATO Stock Number which identifies this type of strap. Incidentally, the actual military spec strap comes in only one color (Admiralty Grey) and one width (20mm). The hardware specs have not changed (chrome plated brass), though at least some of the straps currently issued have stainless steel fittings. And there are actually TWO NATO stock numbers for the straps: Army/Navy (6645-99-124-2986) and RAF (6645-99-527-7059).

And of course Tudor straps are not NATO straps at all, nor do they really resemble them beyond the fact that they are fabric with steel hardware.

Nor do Tudor/Rolex manufacture them.

Is the a NSN for "RAF" type straps? The kind that is simply one long piece of nylon.

Without seeing it on the watch yet I think I prefer the regular navy blue strap that currently comes with most Black Bays, however, in saying that, it is very nice also.

Very cool video. BTW, I just noticed in the video that looks like the Advisor has the same NATO. Maybe my AD just messed them up. LOL. I will ask them to double check. Maybe it's the Advisor NATO.
