I sort of agree that attire does in some ways affect behavior, even though I'm currently and jeans and t-shirt guy.

I always dress appropriately which occasionally requires a tie. My professional world has become more casual. So it would be rather awkward to be so overdressed. But casual need not be scruffy - pressed shirt, shined shoes, etc, never go out of style.

I was taught that is was better to be over dressed than under dressed.

Although most of the world has gotten more casual, the U.S. is by far the most casual and most inappropriately dressed for the most part.

I've become a lot more casual since spending more time in Miami, more out of necessity than preference, but there are times a suit and tie cannot be substituted. At my last company, they all wore golf shirts with the company logo at the large exhibits and I hated it. So much so where I changed that to business attire only, regardless of what other companies are doing.

I feel quite uncomfortable in my UK office without a tie, even if I go in on the weekend and the place is empty. However, since relocating to our Singapore office, I find wearing a tie extremely uncomfortable. I still wear made-to-measure shirts and trousers though.

Our office is a very casual environment.. Jeans and a polo is fine. My past two jobs were suit and tie jobs and I do miss that. I always preferred dressing up for work, even in the IT field.

Renato - I'd like to think there was somewhere in the world with more badly and inappropriately dressed people than in Australia, but I think we'd give you a run for your money. I saw a person in shorts, T-shirt and thongs at the theatre recently. Should have been refused admission. Have seen customers in bare feet and only board shorts in Banks. As a retired person I get sick of shorts & t-shirt and like to dress up occasionally.
Here in the sub-tropics (non-metropolitan) most business people don't wear a tie anymore.

I'm a jeans, jacket and shirt guy. Always wear good shoes. I have started delivering 'Presentation Skills' courses to my industry and I think that provided your look works in your industry, be 'comfortable'. Nothing worse than a contrived look and nothing or that slightly uncomfortable feeling that you look wrong.

Nothing looked more contrived than jeans with a business shirt (particularly outside the trousers) and a suit coat. I see this combination on so many TV shows and it just screams "Try-hard". Jeans are not and never will be anything but recreational wear.

I used to have a client from the Middle East who ran a top car dealership; Aston, Rolls etc. He told me about worldwide company policy being look at a client's watch, not clothing as not many people dress up anymore!

The engineering office I work in has gotten very casual. Jeans or khakis, dress shirt or even Polo, shoes or boots, no sneakers.
As a motorcycle commuter I appreciate the relaxed dress code.

I wear an IT Uniform, khakis and a comfortable button down shirt. Rarely is the tie appropriate these days in my space.

Don't own a suit, I do have I think 3 shirts with both buttons and long sleeves though .

As far as untucked shirts mine are to conceal an object on my belt .

I go from flip flops and shorts to suits and ties depending on the situation. With clients I have always tried to dress one notch above their standard attire...respectful but not too stuffy.

I like suits...especially once I went bespoke and got the perfect fit. I think a lot of people dislike suits because they don't fit very well in many cases.

I've worked in different environments - requiring more dressy attire to t-shirt/jeans casual. Hands down, I've preferred the casual environments. I don't understand why non-customer facing roles need to dress up? I've always found that the more comfortable people are, the better they tend to work. No need to dress up in a suit & tie to sit at your computer all day.

Customer facing roles are a different story though. There, I completely understand why more formal types of dress are required.

I have worked on both sides of the dress code fence. I much prefer the casual attire my current workplace requires. Jeans, sneakers and a shirt with a collar (polo or golf shirts). Much more comfortable and easier to get dressed in the mornings. I have 10 nice pairs of jeans, 60+ shirts to choose from and over a dozen pairs of sneakers.

Sad part is, there are still a bunch of people who do not meet or aggressively "stretch" the current guidelines.

When you think about it, it's really about what you grew up with.
When I started work (in 1970) 'dress standards' were very important.
If you worked in a Bank you wore the "uniform" - business attire.
If you worked in a technical role you also wore a "uniform" - tougher work clothes - but still clean and ironed.
These days a lot of the old "rules" are no longer relevant, and I can see that it is probably much more rational - why do office workers NEED dress trousers and a tie?
Why does anyone NEED a suit?
I guess we just feel more comfortable with the standards of our youth.

I wear jeans to meetings/presentations all the time, but we're not talking some faded baggy pair of denims. It is perfectly possible to be stylish and proper wearing jeans.

Jeans and golf shirts or tee shirts 80% of the time. I do like to dress up for a night out with my girlfriend or for special occasions

I do find that sometimes wearing dressier clothes makes me feel more productive at work .... Go figure
