Only in NYC
Perhaps I run in insane finance circles, but today at a rooftop party in the West Village, a guy I didn't know came up to me and said "Sick BLNR man, where'd you find it?"
I bought the watch because I genuinely enjoy it, but I cracked a big smile and we talked watches for a good half hour. Really thrilled he didn't refer to it as a cartoon character, but more thrilled that it was such a good launching pad. Anyone else have good convo starters from their watches? |

I saw a guy in the food market across the street from my apartment with a BLNR last week. I almost said something similar to him, but kept my mouth shut instead. It was the first time I'd ever seen a BLNR in person.
On the other hand, at a bar on the East Side about six months ago a guy commented on my white Daytona, and he was wearing the same watch. We talked watches for about 20 minutes. Very cool. |

I had a conversation started about my blnr (former) when an acquaintance I didn't personally care for mentioned how much he liked it and thought it to be the perfect rolex for daily wear etc.
We had a good chat about watches and he even asked my wrist size wis alert. I feel we are now much better off than before when I assumed he was a d bag. |

I have went up to Rolex owners in the past but more times than not, they look at me blankly. I have gone up to other AP/Patek owners and usually have a decent chat.

I was at the VA last year wearing my BLNR when a dental resident came into the room and said, "Nice watch!"
I said, "Oh, you know about this watch?" We talked about it for a bit before getting down to business.

Recently, the one that has started the most conversations has been my DSoTM, followed by my PAM 422. The SDc and DJII rarely get attention, which is expected, really. Heck, my Legend Diver gets its fair share of compliments too.

There are quite a few things I would say "only in New York" for... but Rolex spotting/conversation would not be one of them.

You talked about watches for a half hour and you didn't ask him if he was a member of TRF?

Once at a Costco a dude standing behind me at the CS line complimented my BLNR and I returned the favor by complimenting his Pam. His GF didn't even look up from as she focused on her cell. Dude said the BLNR was next on his list so I told him to definitely get it.

I haven't seen someone wearing a BLNR in person, but I would definitely have to speak up then. I love watch-spotting, but rarely say anything. I saw a guy wearing a white dial Daytona- same as me- and I just stopped and said "we have great taste," and we had a laugh. I think he was confused, as I was working retail at the time.

I'd have to be drunk (and I don't drink) to approach someone in public and "talk watches" like a school girl talks Justin Bieber...

x2 although I think I know what he means I don't bring up someone else's expensive watch in public unless the situation is low key and appropriate.

I usually do the opposite. I approach people and say "Hey, check out my Rolex!" Some people have a strange reaction, but they're just party poopers.

The internet is a gathering of like minded people that choose to be here and talk watches...Much unlike the poor guy in line at Starbucks that you are trying to get a look at his watch in a way that's not weird, but weird enough that you get spotted so you can strike up a conversation, all while fiddling with your watch so he realizes you are part of the "club" while simultaneously flashing the international I'm a WIS sign...

Of all my watches only the fifty fathoms ever got noticed. We ended up talking about diver watches for 45 minutes. I even let him try on my fifty fathoms, and I tried on his seiko. We both left the party very pleased.

I was at a chinese takeout place the other day and the guy in front of me had a sub on.
I'm not proud of what I did, but I had to try for you guys.
