Jeep SRT or BMW X5M

interesting article below.

Interesting article

I can see your comparison with the old x5m with a X5 4.8 or even the current X5 50 but not the new X5M. The new model has a completely different transmission, engine, and suspension compared to the regular X5.

The current X5/6M is the quickest and most powerful BMW made right now. The ring times of the current X6M are similar to the previous E92 M3. That is an incredible accomplishment considering the weight and high center of gravity

Noooooooooooo. Don't do that. Never pay sticker or over for any car I don't care how limited on how great it is that's basically like throwing money in the ocean and watching it just float away. You'll never get it back.

The M badge is exactly that an overpriced Badge. When Mopar puts the hellcat engine in the jeep it will annihilate everything in its class

So they went from $5k OVER to $5k under...there is about 11% margin (+/-) for BMW dealers in their vehicles. Considering it's a 2015 (about to be a year old with 2016's coming out) I would ask for minimum $10k+ off...my .02. Deal with sales manager directly and skip floor people who have zero decision making ability.

Did a quick search and there are 77 new ones in the US right now listed...phone is your friend.

Good luck.

I know you dabbled with Land Rover for a bit - have you considered the RRS SVR?

If it is truly between the Jeep and Bimmer - I'd have to go M on this one.

Heya Lazlo,

If I had it my way, I would be all over the RR. My previous one was my favorite car ever.

However, I kid you not, I got comment after comment from customers. Some joking, some serious...."hey, nice car, must be making a lot of money off me".

I bought a jeep GC Summit and I like that a lot too, but I am looking for something a little more...

I figured the BMW flies under the radar to most people because, well, and I don't want to offend anyone, but it sometimes feels like everyone has a BMW. I figured it would not stand out too much.

However, the more I think about it, the more I think I am wrong. And I think that people will know exactly what it is.

I have always been a huge jeep fan, and I will feel much more comfortable in the SRT. I love the look and I will very much appreciate the extra horses.

I do not need all of the finery of the 5M, even though I would love to have it.

But if I had it my way, I would be all over the new RR. That would be my pick 100%.

I like the SRT a lot - when I see one, I don't think negatively, but rather, that's one bad a-- truck and the owner must really love muscle cars. It's pure in that way.

The M is refined... can blend in, but can understand the stigma it may come with. Jeep is a great company and eating up a ton of share from the likes of LR and so on... so maybe it is the right one for you.

Just a month ago I was about to pull the trigger on this thing.

I always pay 500 over invoice, before any incentives, and order my BMWs to spec. It's too easy with the SUVs being built in SC you can have it in 30 days. If you can wait, I highly recommend building to spec.

I also find my m3 flies under the radar, coming out of a 911 anyways. Everyone thinks it's another silver 3 series and I like that.

I would never consider the jeep because the x5 interior is more ergonomic and idrive, HUD etc make it a no contest for me.

Typical deal on a non hellcat mopar. 1% under invoice before incentives.

Have you seen the interior on the srt jeep? Google it.

I'm not saying the BMW is not a nice car. I'm saying for the money the srt is better. The BMW is a six figure car. The srt is at least 35k cheaper.

Having owned a the newer grand Cherokee and several bmws... Bang for your buck I would get the SRT8.

Now used vs new. Probably a used X5 to be in the same ballpark.

One of my best friends owned both at the same time for a while...ended up keeping the X5M for his wife and selling his SRT for an Audi S4 as a daily.

Perfect! Can't stand people who start negotiations at sticker when they should be starting at invoice

I have a lot of love for the jeep GC in general and I admit I did not convey that. I have been inside loaded overland models and such not sure how much better the seats and infotainment is.

I should confess I have owned 2 prior x5 and a few other BMWs so I'm a bit of a fanboy. That said, I really do like the seats, idrive, fit and finish etc. I would most likely get the 35d or 35i, even though my last two were v8s cough

I found an SRT with the color combo I like.

The owner is currently driving it and apparently it has under 1,000 miles on it.

I was offered fair money for my Summit and the car at 67,000.

It's really very tempting. And for sure, the lower price is compelling. It's not a X5m, but it is super nice inside, love the look outside, and the sound of the exhaust alone is implying many fun hours behind the wheel.

Seth, that's a big price difference in the both vehicles. Personally, if you are a big V8 type of guy, then the Jeep is the right choice. I can not learn to love the BMW power plant, I try but it's not in my DNA. Yes the BMW has more technology, probably a better vehicle to drive but it just does nothing for me. The jeep, is imposing to look at, a blast to drive and has a power plant that you will not get tired of. Foot to the floor and you are smiling. Drive by a bus stop with the peddle squashed and all bystanders are looking in awe. Drive that thing in the city with a tunnel of buildings and that big V8 sound will make you laugh at yourself. Just a thought, have you even looked at any of the AMG SUV? ML, that's a nice family hauler. Have fun.

If you're going to play the mind games of "SRT is better bang for the buck", you are not being fair to yourself. I really don't care for either, but if you keep telling yourself, well it's $35k less, etc...guess what, on trade it's still $35k less (well really much more of course). Both SUV's are not great on the resale side, and you are a flipper, so I hear you convincing yourself "my clients will think I'm too successful if I drive a M"...that is the biggest bunch of crap--sorry. If you maintain that philosophy, just go buy a Pinto...OH and sell all of your watches worth more than $10. Quit worrying about what others think--you never win. Buy what you like and enjoy (trust me your clients really could careless).

You are looking for some enabling on the Jeep, so just go buy it. This is a classic case of chasing the 'deal' vs really wanting the car.

Good luck with either one--I'm sure you will be happy for a few months and start looking at something else.

You make some very fair points.

Interestingly enough, I started this thread for some X5M enabling. And it's clearly the winner here. But somehow I did convince myself that the Jeep is the right move.

In regards to my clients, I lived it with the RR. And my closest competitor drives an AMG, and I heard my clients make comments about him too. I kid you not, I heard it consistently. I tend to try and find a balance.

An image of success without going over the top. This is also what stops me from buying the gold Rolex. SS and no one really thinks too much about it. It's expensive surely, but not over the top.

I agree completely with the theory of buying for oneself. But im not sure I'll ever live that theory. I tend to believe that everything we do is part of the sale. And while it's my business, I'm the lead sales guy and even if it's not my deal, I'm still involved "selling" confidence in the company.

I stated originally that I'm biased about the jeep because I've got one now and love it. And my wife drives my older one. I've had 5. However, when I decided to step up my game a little, my initial thought was to go big and that led me to the M.

Also, and I'm sure to get scolded for this, I am not sure I do well enough to justify a 100k$ car in my own head. I can afford it. But not sure I do well enough to justify it.

That's the same reason I've got a 2015 5.0 in my garage rather than a 911. And I'm ok with this line of thought. Not sure many will understand that.

15 years ago my bank told me I could "afford" a home for 300k. I didn't even look at anything over 200k. I lived there for 10 years and it was the smartest move I ever made. Living "under" my means has gotten me to a point where I can make stupid flips and not worry a whole hell of a lot about finances. I still feel stupid about stupid moves, but it's not a game changer.

But you hit the nail on the head, I'm a flipper. While lately my Grail is to find contentment with my watches, I don't see it happening with cars. I'd like to believe this is the one I'll hold onto for a while, but my office had an over/under going on my current car of 6 months and those that took the under will win.

So we shall see. Most likely going with the Jeep. But this race is not over yet.

I do appreciate the dialogue. Helps me think about this from a lot of angles.

If you can afford the BMW, that's what I would choose. The motor is a great tuning platform. A simple ECU tune and you're at 600+ whp. Remove the badges and people will think it's just a normal X5... It's the best of both worlds, really.

Having said that, I think the new X5 is somewhat ugly compared to the last generation.

Never understood these high horsepower grocery getters. Buy a basic jeep and save for a real sports car in the garage. The horsepower output in most of today's sports cars cannot be totally used without going to a track, much less so for a SUV. I have an X5 diesel as a daily driver, tremendous torque, by the way. It gets great mileage which suits it's purpose. When I want to race, I take the Aston. If you're a flipper you should be looking at pre-owned, no reason to be foolish with your money.

Different strokes for different folks. I drive a lot putting nearly 30k miles on a year. Im back and forth from Maryland, Phili, Conn and Mass quite a bit. It's more fun when driving something you like. My old man has the same X5 as you. He loves it. But while I debated the M, the diesel version is not for me.

And while I very much like Porsche, Jag, Aston and the like, my mustang more suits my personality. I do think the reference of a "real" sports car is funny tho. I more consider the mustang a muscle car but with the new irs, it handles the curves pretty good too. Either way, like I said, it more suits who I am. Along the same line of thought, I suppose the SRT does too.

Seth, you have some great points and solid character. I built an SRT last night online and it came out to around $71K. Do you think you could negotiate a new one out the door for $67K or less? Reason being, maybe getting one brand new is best? If you can get one at parity. Just my 2 cents.

With a vehicle like this, I know many people beat on them. I like to have the power, but I tend be pretty gentle for the most part. I do prefer to go new.

That said, the one I've found is currently being driven by the owner of the dealership and apparently has less than 1,000 miles on it. It seems like a good mix of all worlds to me.

I'll get to actually see it and drive it Monday. That will be the ultimate test.
