Hard to turn bezel

Hey everyone! So celebrating the 4th at my parents lake home and I was messing with my dads sub and the bezel is really hard to turn. So I looked closer and it sits a lot closer to the case than my 16610 (D 2005). His is around a 1997 I think not sure. Was something changed when they went from lug holes to no lug holes?

Not sure what's stopping it turning but you're right - His has lugholes and hollow endlinks that are raised above the lugs covering more of the bezel. Quite normal. Try blasting it with water, failing that and, feeling brave you can pop it off and check under it...
