Vintage Daytona SS

Pardon me for being stupid, but....

We all know that a vintage daytona SS is worth mega beer tokens, and that they are highly sought after and very collectable, what i want to know is..................WHY???

There an Ok watch, but paul neman had one and now everyone wants one? Yes they have a few chrono dials, not that there really any use to many people, theres a gazillian different dial arrangements and only a few of them make it worth so much, and its an ok looking thing, but nothing really special.

I know im going to hurt many daytona owners feelings here, but i just dont get it.

Now Bonds SS sub, i can see that, it has usability, proveonce, history, fame, quintisentialness, classic looks, and been worn in very famous films by very famous people, but the daytona was worn by paul newman, a fairly large star, in a not so famous movie.

Someone please explain, and can anyone tell me why it can tell you how fast you were going and how long it took you, and all that, but cant even tell you what date you did it on!!

Sorry for getting so grumpy about it, but i just dont get the obsession.

Up to $150 grand for a paul mewman in GWO!!!!!!

Also someone please post a pic of the Paul neman dial and explain why it is different from the others? Thanks

Hi,
Why does anybody put a value and desire on anything?
The Daytona is an iconic watch now, but when it was first released and for about 20 years afterwards it wasn't very popular much like the Orange Hand Explorer II, which is now much sought after.
When a watch is not popular it doesn't sell well that makes it rare.
Then it naturally becomes collectable and that coupled with it being rare has collectors bidding the value up as they pay ever higher prices for the watch they want.
I personally love the Daytona 6263/6265, but prefer the standard dial with acrylic bezel, others love the PN dial.
Why do we particularly like Rolex ??????
Here are a few pics the 1st and 3rd are PN the 2nd and 4th are standard, the bottom one is my personal favourite.

P.s. Paul Newmans personal watch is the standard dial watch not the exotic one.

Like everything mate, it is all down to personal taste.
I also forgot to mention there is no way I could or would pay 150,000 USD for a Paul Newman dial Daytona and the standard dial went over priced about 5 years ago.
The Valjoux caliber 72/72c movement is used in hundreds of different brands from the same era some unknown and still available for a few hundred dollars and still look as good, but it doesn't say ROLEX on the dial and that is what they/we pay for however many excuses for why, great history (very short compared to Omega, Heuer, Longines, Blancpain, Patek and so on), great quality (not as good as Vacheron/JLC, Lange, Audermars or Patek), great time keeping ( not as good as a G Shock), it is still the fact it says ROLEX on the dial that prises the beer tokens from our wallets and over the counter.

Are you saying the Daytona of that era didnt have a Rolex mech? or did i misunderstand. Hmm, i dont know anything abou the other watches, would love to have some more experiance in other makes, but i havent come across the ads, and have been put off as i didnt know anything about them etc. Am curious to note other watches are more acurate, relyable or what have you.

No the Rolex daytona didn't have a Rolex movement until 2000, until then it had a Valjoux Caliber 72 from introduction in 1960 until 1988 when it was replaced by a modified Zenith El-Primero movement.
There are many other brands that are as good and better than Rolex, but Rolex has in it's short history made many horological firsts including the Oyster case and helium escape valve in the Seadweller, but others too have made Horological breakthroughs.
Rolex have marketed their breakthroughs and their brand very well.
When Rolex started in London around 1905 all Wildorf and Davis did was buy movements and cases and put them together, but by this time Heuer were almost 50 years old, Longines over 70, Omega were 25, Patek Philippe were almost 70 and Blancpain were 170 years old, so there will always be great debate among watch idiots about who is better etc.
I personally think every maker has their place and I have owned or do own watches by many, but Rolex sports watches have something inexplicably special about them.

To be honest the only Newman of those posted by Spark that really grabs me is the bottom right one with the black bezel. Dont get me wrong the others are nice enough, but with their metal bezels they arent massively different from what you can get today.

Personally, I'm not a big Daytona fan, but this dial with the contrasting dial, square blocks in the sub-dials and black bezel are just so unique. It is really quite stunning in person. But the date feature would have been a real bonus.

Actually, Mr Newman was photographed wearing a Panda PN many years ago, and published in an Italian magazine.

Could not agree more with you. I don't like the PN dial very much, but I do love the 6263 Daytona with a silver dial. So here's one more pic of it besides the one you posted:

I don't go for the James Bond stuff.

At least Paul Newman (and Steve McQueen for that matter) were real people doing real things and were both very cool people at that.

It is a bit ironic that PN may have only worn the "PN" dialed Rolex a couple of times. His 6263/5 black face Daytona was a gift from his wife, I believe, and was worn for 20+ years.

I agree with the others that the silver face 6263/5 is just the most stunning looking Rolex ever.

Heaven forbid Rolex would have the sense to make a modern version of it.

I like the PN dials....and the others.. I just wouldn't pay anything extra for them..

Collectors and the things they collect are a definite part of the world today.

Some hoard their collections in locked rooms and don't share with anybody..others just like the attention they get when they spend exhorbitant amounts of cash, but then they're off to something else.....

They're here to stay...and they'll keep those Newmans, Reds, and White GMT's out of the hands of most of us for a long, long time.


(But, boy, wouldn't you like to find one of them in the bin bottom at a flea market)
