Rolex Expedition Adverts.

I thought I would share my collection of Rolex tool/sports watch adverts. I love them and they are one of the reasons I got into Rolex.

They are focused on the following watches, Explorer, Explorer 2, GMT Master 2, Submariner and Sea Dweller.

They are all the 5 digit references; which produced the best adverts...

The first one is about John Ridgeway and features the explorer 2.

Love your posts; especially since I'm a former Explorer and current Explorer II owner. Mine saw a lot of flight time in the SH-60 Seahawk but never to the poles like yours. Looking forward to this thread.

Some of the Eric Fraser ads from the 1950s were very attractive, and always had an interesting story behind them. They included a watch dropped from a bridge into a river in Pakistan, a crashed pilot's watch found by a gardener in England, and a watch lost and found in the Brazilian jungle.

Fraser (1902-1983) also illustrated popular editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in the 1970s.

This is one of my favourites;

Sir Wally Herbet and his Explorer. I had the privilege to meet Sir Wally at the Royal Geograohical Society. In a crowded room I needed some peace, so found a chair in the corner away from the bustle. I sat down next to an elderly gentleman. "It's to busy for me in here" he said, we chatted for about half an hour. In the end I had to leave, he held out his hand; " a pleasure to meet you- my names Wally- "
The do was in his honour!

A couple of years later, at another do for an Antarctic trip we had done, I was seated next to Sir Wallys wife: she wore his GMT Master..

This is the advert that inspired me to get my first Rolex.

I like the mix of the Arctic and the ocean. And it shows in reality you only need just the one watch!

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is a living legend. Someone who inspired me to get into expeditions, he has even been patron to several of my own expeditions. And I have been lucky enough to meet him on several occasions.

Here is a great advert of the GMT master, featuring Sir Ranulph crossing Antarctica with Dr Mike Stroud- who we actually did a trip for in later years! ( but we can't advertise the fact- so mums the word!)

Didn't some of these make it into a promotional book Rolex made in the 60s? If I remember correctly, it was small and the art work was colorized. I agree that the stories were excellent, and I wish they'd do more copy today.

Yes, these are great. Someone should do a book on Rolex advertising..
