motion light switches ?
Any one have these light switches installed in their house ?
I was thinking for the washroom, but my friend told me to "stay away" from installing these in the washroom, as he read online some guy was sitting on the stall, and the light turned off on him, in the middle of doing his business, and the motion sensor wasn't catching him wailing his arms in the far corner of the washroom. are there some with a timer, and do these save on the electricity bill ? |

In my former career we used these sometimes. In a private dwelling I'd doubt there are financial gains to be made. You are correct about the potential for timing out or being out of ranger of the sensor. F/ex if you have a shower screen that will block the sensor and you will need to set the timer to beyond the longest time someone will use the shower, which will likely mean the lights will be on longer than they were before.

In my house we have them in the bathrooms, but in the part where you take a shower there's a light switch, we just have the auto lights for the sink room(we have 2 part bathrooms though, so somone can take a shower/crap while somones doing their hair and make up.) I love them though, keeps all the grimy dirt and oils off the wall since noone in my family can just flick a switch
I think it's more of a convenience than $$$ saver though |

They are good for large public toilets like in school buildings, then you save money. In a house it will be minimal unless you're the type who leaves the lights on.
We have motion sensors on the driveway, not inside our house. We do however only have LED's instead of regular bulbs which obviously saves quite a bit of money over the years. |

I use one in my kitchen which controls two small led can lights which are enough light 90% of the time. It's fantastic as we often enter my house through the rear of the kitchen and don't need to reach for the light switch.
Also put one in my master walk in closet as the house is older and the switch is in an inconvenient location at the back of the closet. |

I have one in my office. If I'm sitting here just typing & nothing else, sometimes it will shut off. Then I do the big arm wave.

I added them to the walk-in closet it my house about a week after I moved in. Most every time I walked into the closet, the light was left on from the visit before.
I have them set to 2 minutes, so it works out well. Also have them in my kitchen which is where I walk into the house from the garage. They control the under-cabinet lights, enough light to walk in and through the kitchen without reaching for a light switch. They go off after a few minutes there too. |

We have six of them running down the driveway, , two at the end of the driveway, one on the walkway from the driveway, and eight sets of motion activated spots on the house.
Those lights are all daylight sensitive as well. So they are active at night, but only come on via motion. I don't see where there is a whole lot of energy to be saved in a bathroom. |

I have one on my basement stairs light. I always have my hands full when going up and down those stairs, so I just leave it on. When I hit the second stair down, it just turns on.

i use a couple in the garage , they are great , but after fifteen mins , just when your lining something up , you seem to find yourself in the dark trying not to move but wave your foot about to get some light back.

We have them at the boys' school. Drives people crazy when they go off due to inactivity.

I have one in our master closet.
Works well given wife had the tendency to leave the light on constantly for her closet gremlin buddies who hated the dark. |

They're pretty sensitive and I can't imagine anybody waving their hands and not setting it off. If you toss a washcloth in the laundry room it goes on instantly. If you don't like it, take it out and put it someplace else, it's just a switch.

I use them in the pantry and laundry room. I think it is the perfect place for them!
I don't do the laundry and do not take too long to pick a snack! |

Thanks for all the replies, I will have to think about where the best locations would work best.
it would make sense to have them in, walk-in closet, laundry room, garage and basement stairs. |

The one I have in the garage works well for little trips to the trash or to grab something from the freezer, it has an override on it so if I'm going to working out there I just touch it and it stays on till I touch it. again , not sure I would need one inside the house though.
