As I am in retail, I am working 65 hour weeks, and time to travel around is very rare, and NO ONE ever calls me back to try and sell me a watch. Crazy to me that there are not better Salespeople handling these watches. The best thing for me is to probably buy one online, save the taxes, and forget about the experience of buying one from a dealer. My Salesperson is fine, it is all Management driven, this pressure stuff, I can tell. I have even spoke with the owner, who gave me a $50 in-store credit (yawn). I am a principle kind guy, and I am disappointed in someone in luxury watch sales to be so low-class.
I had a DBlue before, loved it, had to sell to raise some fast cash for a family member, and it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. My wife almost killed me, she said we would have taken the money out of savings instead of me doing that. It is just a watch, they do build more, but what a pain in the butt this has turned out to be. I tried to buy my old one back, but he will not let it go, no problem, so I'm thinking about buying a standard DS with a black face in "Mint" condition, save the grief, and a few thousand bucks.
Best move is move on. These are luxury products and if you are going to buy from an AD you should get classy service not a hussle and hassle.

This.

Forget this AD and trying to be the good guy by buying locally. Sometimes it pays to just get what you want, how you want. For this kind of purchase, you should get your cake and eat it.

My AD experience was underwhelming at best, and I was only buying from an AD in order to try to forge a relationship for future purchases [and my company was paying so I wanted a "no stories" brand new watch from an AD].

Based on my experience there versus the experience here at TRF [and the 4 PMs I got with people offering to put me in touch with ADs that they love], I'll likely buy from a trusted seller here for my next Rolex. It must be a supply and demand/hit or miss thing, but it seems that experiences vary greatly by individual shop.

Reason #43 for buying from a Trusted Seller here, save the hassle, taxes, attitude and having to post threads like this.

What makes this difficult is the D-Blue is hard to get.
For any other Rolex watch, there is no question that AD would be scratched and never called again. As you had an agreement with them to hold the watch and their general demeanor was rude.

But I say this is not okay with me. Do what you like, but for me any luxury purchase is an experience that should be positive in all respects. There is no watch that I will ever want enough to allow a seller to mistreat me or be rude.

My AD back home contacted me on Saturday to say my D-Blue had arrived. I won't be back home in the UK to collect until November - 13 hours flight and three and a half hour drive. They wanted the full £8,250 up front to hold the watch. I paid over the phone with a stupid grin on my face that was splitting my head in half. I didn't mind for several reasons:-

1. I want the watch;
2. They will serve champagne to Mrs Van a Driver and me (and my mum, if she's with us);
3. I really want the watch;
4. The supervisor is a personal friend who I have known for around 25 years;
5. I want that watch so bad I would mud wrestle my own granny for it;
6. She was extremely apologetic in asking me for the full balance up front but they have a waiting list as long as a big long thing;
7. I'm so excited about my pick up that I can't sleep and I have three and a half months to go;
8. The D-Blue is so in demand, they could have sold it a dozen times over in the time she took my card details over the phone;
9. I might have mentioned this in passing but I want that watch.

JDI, post pictures and enjoy

Was the deposit non-refundable? If so the AD had nothing to worry about.

Always could be worse. I had to put 50% of the watch in advance and wait 10 days for them to bring it from Buenos Aires. If I dind´t do this, no watch. Didn´t get any coke either!

I have a sales team, so I'm rather short with flawed sales pitches that are used on me.
But I give it right back, right there.

Yea, sorry. There is no way I would have bought this. I would have called them on it and told them to go ahead and sell it and refund my $500.

Then called David. Well actually I would have called David first and avoided all of this.

When selling high end products, cars, watches, clothes, etc., yes, it is business from the sellers standpoint. But these high end retailers have put considerable resources in to making the customer feel that the purchase is more than just transactional.

Besides, I can go to a local bakery or hardware store and get a smile, a friendly comment and an expression of appreciation for my business - that's service!

The AD is definitely not handling this the right way, they should learn some manners. At the same time if you really want the watch and it's not available anywhere else, then just buy it from them. I'm pretty sure you'll forget all about the unpleasant experience once that beauty's strapped to your wrist.

I would go ahead and close the deal and then express your feelings to management. If they handle it properly then you can consider a continued relationship. If not, move one.

As this watch is in such demand the AD's are fighting over them. If they get one and don't sell it immediately Rolex might knock them down a few AD's on the list of who is going to get one next... and if they sell it fast enough maybe next time they'd get more than 1.

That said this still isn't your problem, and as you've bought from them before they should know you are serious, which the deposit should have told them. It's tough to establish yourself at a new AD... but if you do go to a new one tell them about your experience here while you are wearing your proven purchases and I bet they'll work to earn your business.

Congrats on the new watch!

This is poor training, poor etiquette, bad manners, and raw greed showing through.
If this is what they'r like at the point of sale then I shudder to think how they'd perform if you subsequently have an issue with either of your watches.

Bingo! i was asked to put 1/2 down for mine...and i called around the entire US looking for one in stock.. Nada....and guess what? I put 1/2 down and await one to show up to the AD...It's just what we're dealing with on this particular watch...Most places i called, have at least a waiting list of 5 or more who are on standby to buy them. You can't argue with supply and demand...But i agree it may not feel very pleasant, but i understand why they are asking for payment...Deals fall through from time to time...But would've been nice for them to treat you a little better. Either way, i would still buy the watch...Just rethink the AD next time you are in the market...good luck and i look forward to seeing some pics. ;-)
