Went with a pam 312 for my first Panerai. 1950 case with in-house movement. Can be had for less than 6k in the classifieds.

Head on in to your nearest AD and try a few on, starting with the 005 & 111. Also keep in mind how much you can the look of different Pams by buying some new leather or rubber straps, as you can see from those guys who have already posted pics above.

For me I would look for the following....

1. In house automatic movement
2. 1950 Luminor Case
3. Sandwich dial
4. Small seconds and date
5. 44mm

So that would strongly lead me to a 312 or a 351

312 was my first PAM watch as well. Unfortunately, it's not getting any wrist time, so I've got if for sale here on TRF classifieds. Selling to help acquire a grail of mine. Good luck.

Thanks Nick C, as soon as I decided on the 372 and sold all my other 44mm Panerai , I went on a strap buying frenzy for the 372. I think I have all my bases covered...might need to try a canvas strap.

With a budget like that you have so many good choices, that is Panerai's sweet spot. It really depends on your preferences though. Don't forget about the Radiomir collection (I personally love them, especially the new 1940's style); however, the Luminor is what most people want in a Panerai. You need to ask yourself these questions:

Radiomir or Luminor?
Manual or Automatic?
Does In-house truly matter to you?

After you answer those it is easier to narrow down, but my suggestions would be
380, 24, 005, 372, 312, or 88. These are the more popular ones, but I really like something more exclusive so I would even look into models that are not as common to see. Maybe the white dial model like the 499.

I would be more than willing to help you narrow it down as well. :) Good luck!
