sUBMARINER 6538
I found this Submariner in a small pawn shop in Peru and wondering which model is it exactly. I think it's a 6538 4 lines gilt of 1956. My main doubt is about the crown graduation (0 from 15 is not graduated in minutes) and does not have the red triangle on the top.
Anyone can give me some orientation? I don't want to discuss the price with the owner before knowing exactly I am dealing with! Thanks |

I am not expert, but the real experts will need more pictures to be of any help.

Need some real quality photos. I have never had one in my posession and am far from expert, but I don't know if that watch is real. I have a lot of doubts.

Photos photos! A few things look a bit off. Bezel insert is not original and is sitting proud, looks just stuck on, dial, hard to tell, hand lengths look a little odd, don't like the look of the rehaut, something is off but could just be photos and distortion. At that price I would be very cautious. With the Internet it is very easy to check world prices and that price is very low.

The brightest of the 4 lines is suspect to me (unless it's just your picture)....compared to
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/photo-...une-17-auction (scroll down - there's a 6538 in there) |

As stated in the other section. The rehaut looks off in the pic. In the side profile picture it is difficult to identify the "thinness" and droop that should exist on the lugs. These cases are really thin and have a great droop at the lug ends. Also the bezel usually has much more brass showing on a watch of this age. I also support the comment above about the minute hand, they generally reach all the way to the chapter ring. The case does not really look polished but there are minimal bevels and one of the traits of these models are profound bevels. Also on a 7206 bracelet, they generally lay flat off the fixed end link which is a design feature. Most of the aftermarket rivets I have seen have this trait where they do not lay flat off the end link like this one looks in the picture. Not to be a kill joy, but I would tread lightly on this one. Too much uncertainty.

Yes sir indeed. I personally love the elegance of the early sub cases. Truly art.

Seriously, it literally took me a simple Google search of "fake 6538" to confirm that piece is no good. A process that took a few minutes at most, including reading the material that popped up on the search.

Peru is a hotbed for fakes - especially vintage. I try to do a walkthrough of ma and pop shops when I'm passing through Lima and am always surprised that everyone has an old cruddy-something-or-other lying around that's as fake as the day is long. Buyer beware when dealing there...

Thank you all of you for your comments. I had exactly the same feeling but would like to confirm I was true. Hopefully one day I'll find the rare pearl!!
