Rolex owner for a day....
Hello.
I don't post here much, but I figured many of you would get a kick out of my latest Rash of problems. I bought a Panerai 422 a year ago as a birthday present for my self. Over the last year I have really enjoyed the watch, but I was becoming addicted. I do not have the funds to be a watch collector, but I was pushing myself into more watches, and straps, and more straps. I was getting a bit tight on money... and thinking toward the future, if I were only having one watch (just a everyday watch) it would probably be a Rolex Sub C. I searched some dealers looking to trade the 422 in on a Rolex. I got some good numbers from a few Grey Dealers... but I never got the warm and fussy with them... too short too cold, etc. I found a great AD that reps both Panerai and Rolex, and was able to work out a fair deal. (email me if you are looking for a good dealer) SO we do the deal... I get the Rolex in my hands earlier this week. I put it on... and it looks good. But it does not feel good. Within a few hours my wrist is burning... its like it is on fire. I loosen the band, I tighten the band.... nothing. It still hurts. I start researching... and the only thing I can assume is I'm now allergic to 904L stainless. I call the dealer, they still have my 422, and we will trade back. I offered to refund all shipping (as this was not their fault)... They were more than great with dealing with this odd issue. So soon I will a panerai owner again... Sometimes you need time out from something in order to really appreciate it
904L has a high nickel content, which may have caused the problem.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Nickel allergies are pretty common nowadays. Only way around that is wearing a nato or something. But thats a waste of one of the best made bracelets on the market.

sounds like you need to save up for a white gold sub or GMT.
A little late now, but a simple nato style strap would have fixed your problem since it eleminates ALL surface contacts with the watch to your skin... |

I completely agree and disagree... I have always had a rolex, and I actually find them very comfortable. My daily watch is a GMTII. However a year ago I bought the new Sub C—116610, same at the one you bought.... And I really disliked it. I find in heavy on the top, not well balanced at all and I find the edges of the bracelet and the lug's to be too sharp, making it usually uncomfortable for a rolex. Since I never wore it I just decided to trade it for a Panerai, my first.... I am eager to try it out... Should get it sometime this week.

It certainly could be an allergy to the metal (most likely Nickel content as mentioned). I'm not sure what type of steel that the Panerai 422 has, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of metal even touching the wrist (clear caseback too). If that's the case, you'll want to lean towards ceramic or titanium cases down the road because they're less likely to cause a problem.

Thanks all for the kind words.
my 422 is back on my wrist (with no pain or burning) I guess the Rolex was just not meant to be. Now back to what matters... the wrist shot: Untitled by Joseph Jeram, on Flickr |

No, it's 904L
Panerai use 316L This is what they have to say about their choice of material: "AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin."
