Calling DD experts...
Well, background first. A group of friends got together for a boys night, we fired up the grill, opened some vino, talked, laughed and watched Thursday night football.
One of the group, a good friend which I have known for over 10 years was sporting something that is, at least to me, uncommon. During the past years, I have seen him wear mostly vintage Rolex, all of which had been handed down to him, many 1970s timepieces. Today, I couldn't (well, I did not want to because of the moment) take pictures, so here it goes. This is a not a newer model for sure, because of lug size and also the depth of the crystal, which confirms a vintage timepiece. It is a Stainless Steel watch (I am 99% sure, 1% says white gold) Day Date, but: -Bracelet is oyster, with non hidden clasp (like '80 s DJ models) -Domed bezel -Endlinks to head are flush and complete (like 118238) and do NOT have the gap previous DDs have (like the way 1803 and 18238 enlinks fit the case/head) Some things tell me this is a very unique SS DD but the endlinks are a curve ball. I know for sure he is not into watches and would not be interested in a Franken watch...is this legit or something usual? I am very open and honest with him, I have told him to hold to his 1803s and he will very likely ask me about this timepiece next time...any thoughts/input Sorry for the no pics, and thank you in advance for your help! Yes, I am a WIS! |

There were only a handful of SS DDs made in the late 1950s, I believe the reference is 6611.

I never even knew they made SS DD. Very interesting. Going to research it tomorrow at work.

Calling DD experts...
There were a few steel day dates in the 60's prototypes for staff and one known 2 tone day date also.

They say that only 6 of the SS versions of the DD were ever produced in 1959 ref 6611,one was supposed to be sold around 2000 if I remember. And was sold for a far higher price than if it was gold, but myself still not 100% convinced they were made for public retail sale I know the movement was different to the gold version, plus on oyster style bracelets..

I've heard that there were a VERY small number of all stainless Day-Dates produced in the late 50s --- but have never personally seen one --- or many pics of them either.
If that's what it is, he truly has a GEM. |
