i agree that Rolex will likely not get involved in this, at least in the next few decades, but as far as why they would get involved in this "mickey-mouse territory"... it's a multi billion dollar business.

Ironically Disney is one of the most valuable brands in the world. Funny you should call it "Micky Mouse".

Rolex is always meant to built watch that last your life time. While tech watch, merely survive 2-3 years. May be you won't mind paying 8-9k and above to a tech watch, I can only envy you for that. 😁

How hard is it to pull your phone out of your pocket?
About as hard as it is to press the screen on your smart watch?

High end mechanical watches and smart watches are parallel markets which don't compete with each other. Therefore, no need for Rolex to get involved solely for competition's sake.

TAG have nothing to lose by testing the water – if anything, it may indicate sales/brand image need a boost, and this could be the short term answer.
I’d be of the opinion that their demographic is quite different from Rolex’s, so if those buyers fancied a smart watch, they’re more likely to just go with an Apple one.
Ergo, Rolex/Tudor doesn’t need to concern itself with this segment of the marketplace.

How many people were saying the same thing about Rolex and bracelets prior to the release of the Oysterflex bracelet? Just saying.

Because the mod who moved it thought it would be better here. Any more questions?

I'm on my 2nd generation of smart watches and have learned they have an obsolescence factor not shared by fine Swiss timepieces. Sure new movements come out that eclipse older ones in Rolex, Omega, etc., but the old ones are supported for decades. In smart watches you can count the support cycle on one hand.

Another aspect is the actual usefulness of Pebble, Samsung and Apple's smart watches. I like notification of an incoming call or text message - but a simple mechanical chime (like a minute repeater's) activated by a small BT radio module would suffice. Makes no difference what's coming into my phone - I'm gonna be reaching for it one way or the other.

So a simple notification function added to a Sub would be a great start. But it'll likely be Tudor's turf to try this before the mothership sets sail with such an endeavor.

With Rolex selling a million watches a year, do they need to? Probably not and probably won't.

Until (at least some) the Rolex target audience say "you know, I wish Rolex made a digital watch... like Casio, Breitling and Tag" I don't see it happening.

I think I feel the same way. The only thing that appeals to me about the smart watch is the notifications. I preordered a chronos smart watch attachment: https://www.wearchronos.com

I think if it ever comes, I'll put it on my daily mechanical watch (a cheapie) and see how I like just the notification features. If I like it maybe I'll consider other smart options.

As far as Rolex getting in the game... I just don't see it. Maybe at most an accessory like the montblanc strap, or a similar case back system whereas the original watch will still stand the test of time. No way they get into something that's going to be obsolete in a year.

I bought one of the Tag "Connected" smart watches. Had to wait for more to be delivered (first inventory was sold out quickly).

Your quote is right on target, and why I bought the watch. TAG will take this watch back after two years, and -- for another $1,500 -- will give me a mechanical Carrera. The kicker is that this Carrera will be a special model and will *ONLY* be available to those who trade their Connected. Very smart marketing. They know how much we all love owning a smaller-batch or limited edition fine timepiece.

Besides, TAG knows what you said: After two or three years, the watch will be obsolete anyway.

It is kinda nice to have your watch alert you to email, calendar events and texts while you're in a meeting and can't really whip out your phone to check messages.

I wonder if you can get ticketed for using your "device" while driving, when technically, it's not "a device which allows two-way communication".
