Just FYI, most AD's won't authenticate watches anymore as a matter of policy. They don't want the liability if the are wrong. Some the latest replicas are really uncanny copies. If some nut then decides to invest another $1500 to his already pretty decent $400 copy to have it modded and have gen parts added (not the case with OPs watch obviously) it can be very convincing. There are watch appraisers out there that will really assess a preowned watch and will even act as an escrow agent to ensure you aren't getting screwed. It may cost you a couple of bucks, but it's money well spent.

Set2374 that is not true. I can give you AD's here in NY that will do it, for a price. Kind of like a PPI on a car. When you get your watch that you are wanting to buy back, it will have a typed history of everything on the watch. I just got it done for home insurance.

As far as looking at a Rolex in a store and then walking into a Rolex dealer and handing it to him and say, Hey is this real? I can see why they won't do that.

If you ask them that you are about to make a purchase and it is $5000 dollars could they inspect it to verify if it is in fact not stolen and a actual Rolex and to do an appraisal to add it for your home insurance and then tell them you understand that their time isn't free and to let you know how much it will cost, you will see them respond differently.

Also the independent appraiser like you said is another great option. Either way you know your getting a good. watch. I think I will solve my issues with just buying my next watch from a TD here. Seems like the best of both worlds.
