Rolex Movements: Same Watch, Different Cases?

touches upon something I've been thinking about lately. If we were to make a list of all the Rolex models and the movements they contain,

1) how many references would share the same movement?

2) if it's the same movement and only the case-bracelet-decoration is different, how do you feel about that?

Example:

16710 GMT II M-series = cal. 3186
16570 Explorer II M-series = cal. 3186

Example:

16610 Sub Date = cal. 3135
16600 Sea Dweller = cal. 3135

Example:

Air King, Expy I, Sub No-Date = same calibre (Is this true? I might not have my facts straight on this one.)

Aren't these the same watches in different cases? . . . Personally, I can't make up my mind if this is good, bad or a non-issue. So, I welcome your thoughts.









P.S. This thread is not meant as a criticism of Rolex or the above-mentioned references. I like 'em all, esp. the tool watches.

It is just fine with me and in my eyes makes perfect sense. Those movements are of such good quality and if it meets the needs of the particular watch why not use it? Different functions like the Explorer II vs GMT Master II with the bi directional bezel is a good example. Why would the Submariner and SeaDweller need two different movements? The cases of the watch is what makes the major difference in this situation. But that is just my opinion
