Bringing a rolex from hong kong to sydney

I was going to buy my rolex in hong kong next month, when I was suddenly reminded of the tax and gst fee that I might have to pay when bringing it back to australia. It is true I have to pay the fees, or is there a way to avoid it like wearing it on my wrist when I come back?

Its possible you could get stopped by the customs when you re-enter your own country and have to pay any duty, just wear it on your wrist then you have a 50-50 chance.

Yes this is true, if the value is over $900 AUD (which it will be and if you declare it). And I believe it is the GST you pay on the value you paid for it in HK (AUD converted price)

otherwise like what others have said, its a 50/50 chance (if you don't declare it) if you just wear it upon your return.

however if you get caught, depending on the mood of the customs officer you may get fined for intentionally declaring a legal documentation incorrectly. Plus the GST you will have to pay

The same occurs if you claim back the GST, through TRS, and bring the item(s) back into Australia.

I believe it's less than 50/50.

Wear mine out of the country all the time. Have NEVER been asked about it upon return.

FWIW........
Providing your watch is available in a Sydney AD, it may/will be cheaper to buy here now.
I'm in the process of comparing world pricing on a GMT IIC Gold/Steel 116173 and Australia is THE CHEAPEST place in the world to buy new. Yes, slightly cheaper than Japan which is considered by many as the cheapest.
The 116173 in Hong Kong is $91,500 HK Dollars Vs A$16,500.00 locally.
A$1.00 is HK$5.20 so $91,500 / 5.20 =$17,596.15.
Over a thousand dollars cheaper in Sydney with no headaches!
Admittedly this doesn't allow for discounts (you won't get any locally as I have tried) and the HK range would be considerably better.
But, if you can find the watch you want locally, that's where I'd buy it.

Bob.

I would go with the box in the mail discussion. That said the amount of members here who travel with 2-4 watches on holidays dont think you have much to worry. I would have done over 100 international trips in and out of Australia over the years, never had my watch checked once.
