personally not a fan of the BLNR case shape so would do this any day
but imo if you own one you must like it .. so i would hold on to it and add the 15400 when funds allow, the rolex is a great beater and there will be times you want to strap it on to save the RO (or just to switch things up)

Both
I would sell something else or save for the 15400. I have both (albeit a 15300) and they get worn with the same regularity and in the same circumstances. I quickly took the BLNR off the Oyster because it looked such a mess and put it on a Super Jubilee which doesn't show scratches anywhere near as much. OTOH the 15300 looks in much better condition as it has a clever mix of brushed and polished surfaces so doesn't show scratches as much.

I have the same watch and shirt! For a second I thought this might have been one of my pics.

Coming from someone who owes BLNR and who's giving serious look at 15300 or 15400, I won't. For me, AP 15300/15400 is a more emotional purchase. If emotion is the only factor, I would pull a trigger on the AP.
However, Rolex is a more practical of the two (and that's relatively speaking because our beloved hobby intrinsically has high degree of irrationality attached to it). 1. GMT. If you travel a lot or live in different timezone from your family/friends/love ones (both being the case for me), then the BLNR GMT function is good to have. 2. Liquidity. If you ever need to sell your watch quickly, Rolex BLNR will find more buyers and trigger faster purchasing decision. 3. Water Proof. I shower and swim with my BLNR and have zero worry. With the AP, just getting water splash on it from washing my hand will make me automatically check my wrist. 4. Reliability. Take away scratch prone case, Rolex is rock solid. I never even think about servicing problem on my Rolex. With AP, based on my research thus far, the 3120 movement still have occasional teething problem. AP have consistent history of needing periodical service (expensive) and a lot more fragile. You can toss around the BLNR and it still works. You do the same with the AP, and your heart stops a beat or two as you check your wrist to make sure it's still working. Someone made a car analogy and I don't think it's far off. AP is like an Alpha Romeo (the exotic models) or a Maserati. High and likely expensive to maintain. Rolex is like a Benz, just rock solid. Using car analogy, if we can find a way, it's very nice to have an MB to drive on day-to-day basis while reserving the Italian exotic for that impulsive weekend getaway. Having said all this, I'm currently on serious search for an AP 15300/15400/15202 because it can make me lose my better sense (my separate seeking advice on that). PS Yes, I agree that the center polished link on the BLNR attracts scratches like crazy. I solved this by putting NATO strap (Bond color of course) on mine. |
