Just wondering before I lose my watch to the pacific.
Is the clasp strong enough to stay in place while doing an activity like surfing?

i have heard stories of them falling off when a board caught them at the right angle...

do you really need to wear a rolex while surfing?

unless it is one of those poser surf days why not just leave it in the safe and not let it lessen your enjoyment!

Don't feel comfortable wearing it off my wrist on vacation.

I had the clasp of my TT Sub come undone while on the waterslide at Atlantis in the Bahamas. I didn't even feel the watch slide off.

Fortunately, I disregarded the sign telling me not to dive back in and search for valuables.

I found it before the help did. 😀

So perhaps a Rolex clasp on a Sub is not a good idea for surfing.

You can only wear your rolex when diving into a bowl of soup... the only diving allowed with any rolex, especially a sports variation. Proceed with caution.

If you're worried about damaging or losing your watch while surfing, take it off and enjoy your time in the ocean.

Maybe hold off on wearing while surfing Pipeline or Mavericks.

I've spent much of my time on this planet immersed in the oceans chasing waves. The clasp can take it right up until you find that one wave that rolls you in to the beach sans watch. Unless I had way more money than sense I'd never wear a Rolex into the surf zone.

Your clasp will be fine, your spring bars, that's a different matter.
Scuba diving yes, snorkelling yes, swimming yes, surfing em.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'll try to hide it in the glove compartment and lock it.
I've known of people having bad luck with hotel safes in 5 star hotels, I always keep it on when I travel, just never done activity this strenuous on the clasp and/or springbar.

I've surfed all over with my sea dweller on a nato. Put it on a Maratac and you should be fine. Mine has handled as big as 12' w no problem.

I've read of a diver or two whose Sub gets significantly pinched against some apparatus getting in or out of a boat, snaps the spring bar, and off to the deep blue with the watch.

I've surfed small east coast waves with all of my watches. I've had the old clasp on my Daytona open up on a wipeout and quickly updated the clasp and haven't had a problem since. It's a risk you take when wearing it into the water. If you can't handle the risk secure it somewhere on shore.

Problem solved if you're staying in a five star hotel. They will undoubtedly have safe deposit boxes available for hotel guests in the hotel safe. I don't trust room safes either. Stow it in the hotel safe if you don't want to wear it surfing. I don't like the glove box any better than a room safe.

BTW, I'd be more concerned about a wipe out slamming the crystal into the board or a rock and cracking it than I would be about it falling off.
