How the Brits covered their backsides...

...during the War!!

Found this old silk banner/folder from World War II. This was issued to British troops to identify themselves to the Russians as proof that they were English. All they had to do was hold up the banner with the Union Jack and say those words..."Ya Anglichahnin" (meaning "I'm English").

A full set of instructions can be seen on the left. Quite a rare artefact this....have to take great care of such objects....only one of a kind and very valuable.

Doesn't refer to backsides

Hey JJ;
I think your title to the thread is misleading and a bit 'arsey'.

Nowhere on this banner is there a reference to covering their 'backsides' written on the banner in your photo.

The British, includes the English and the Scots, Welsh and Irish troops. I am sure they would never have been required to cover their backsides in any war situation as implied by you in the thread title.

Maybe you were confusing that custom with some past war events that took place in the Middle East?

Steve

Very interesting JJ but I don't think it's big enough to cover the backsides of some of todays Brits.
