Any of you guys use winders?
Any thoughts about watch winders? They are pricey so I'm not sure if they are really worth it. Are they really necessary? Is the only benefit to them to not have to keep resetting the time? Is there any mechanical benefit to using one?

If you do a search on this forum you'll probably find no less than 50 threads on the subject.

I have always used one. 20+ years. There are a bunch of threads about the pros and cons. I understand both sides but have never had movement wear issues from using them. Plus I am a vintage guy so no quick sets...really just makes it convenient for me. If I had modern watches probably be less inclined to use one.

As Brett says, there is hours of entertainment on this subject on TRF.
To answer your specific questions, you can buy cheap ($100.) ones off Ebay that look great and will probably last years - mine has. They are only 'necessary' IF you think they are necessary. I think they are necessary because I alternate two watches daily and the unworn one winds down in the interim, and I do not wish to wind and reset every day. "Mechanical benefit" - The only benefit I can see is reduced 'wear & tear' on the crown, but some respected TRF members do not see this as an issue. Ultimately you have to look at your own situation and weigh up the opposing arguments.

Yes I do. But I will say this, I'm using it less and less as time goes on. I let them wind down in the safe.

They don't need to be costly. Plenty of decent winders around for reasonably cheap prices.
Like Rich Mickol posted above, I now let my watches wind down in the safe if they're not being used, but every so often, if I haven't worn a piece for maybe a year, I do put it on an alternating back and forth spin on the winder for a day or so just to redistribute the oils within the movement. It's generally considered that winders are more workshop necessities. You don't need to use one really unless you alternate say two auto watches on an alternating daily wear cycle. If you do buy one, make sure it has a setting where it will spin in both directions and on a timer. The only cycle I ever use mine on is where the watch will spin clockwise for 10 mins, followed by 10 mins anti clockwise. It repeats this process for three hours before it stops completely for nine hours before it starts the process once again. Some movements will only wind the watch when turned in one direction so make sure any winder you buy can rotate in the direction you require, otherwise it's pointless. |

I have no use for one, way too much unnecessary wear on my watches given my wearing habits.

Yes. Wolf viceroy 2.7. Use it more as storage than necessarily for the winder as all of my non quick set watches are manuals anyhow. It is notice to be Able to grab a watch and go though.

I have a wolf one watch winder that I have been using for my GMT for a few months. Very happy with it. My other watches have only date complications so very quick to set up and no need for a winder.
