Icon5 2016 Rolex Basel Releases... Is this it for the next while?

just had a thought, and correct me if i'm wrong, but with the base daytona now being ceramic, and the YM's new colours and bezel, and AK coming back from a short death; the whole mens rolex sport and cellini model lineup from the 1970's to 2007 has made the leap from evolutionary changes to complete re-works. except for the completely new YM2 and SkyD of course - but that's the exception.

there were always small improvements and cosmetic changes between the 50's and early 2000's but i think this does it for all of them now. and i think we may be looking at the base rolex lineup for the next 20 - 30 years barring a smart watch foray.

thoughts?

Hardly "it"...stay tuned for Basel 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020...and keep going.

Rolex is a marketing company and will always keep things changing.

agree but i don't think the stalwarts like the DJ, Sub, AK, OP, Daytona, SD, GMT, Exp, EXP2 have anything more revolutionary to do... i think we've seen the major rework of the brand foundation.

The GMT has been ceramic for 11 years now. I remember seeing some GMT looking patents on this forum recently. Could be Tudor or a new Rolex GMT master 3?!

I think you will see more frequent refreshes of classics, with introduction of a couple of new functions over time. Sky-Dweller for example. Maybe not a huge seller, but I see that sort of development continuing.

They have a few patents, mentioned in a previous thread, that will likely be incorporated in the next couple of years with new models as well.

Perhaps stylistically the pieces will be the "same" for a while but possibly filtering down of movements perhaps (i.e. Cal 3235 into DJ 36mm)?

agree with all comments... just seems like with the new base Daytona-C, the book on all previous models has now been closed.

If the A-K came back, why not the TOG?

I hope they slow down for a while. Look at Omega, they showed 10 new Sea Masters (that I saw) and another 8 Speed Masters. How many different versions of the same watch does the world need?

Omega is almost as bad as Panerai now with their incomprehensible model range. How does anyone choose one? Basel World seems to be sending Rolex down the same road.

The constant pressure to unveil innovative new designs every year can't be good in the long term. Improvements as technology and need dictate are important but doing it yearly for a press coverage just dilutes the brand (in my opinion).

Totally agree with where you're coming from with Omega, but I think that Rolex is doing it the right way.

Omega has so many versions of the Speedmaster that it's confusing. When Rolex offers another version of a watch, it is very limited to really one other choice and even then they aren't that far apart. This of course isn't referring to different metal or dial options, but rather choices between the DayDate and the DayDate 40 or the DJ and the DJ II.

When Rolex released the DD 40 they discontinued the DD II, whereas Omega or other watch companies have obviously made the decision to offer a much wider range of options.

My 2cents is that there is some relatively recent blur about the direction the company is taking, and that is a direct reflection of many back to back CEOs ( not a good thing at all btw).
I'm seeing the zenith touch in the new tachy dial colors in the Daytona and DD 2016 and YM dials.
Also, bypassing the two-tone ceramic Daytona straight to the steel is very unrolex
Add to it changing Date just from 36 to date just 2 date just 40 in less than 10 years is very unlike the brand

TOG for Basel 2017

The Turn-o-graph is the next watch to be reworked in my book
