New Daytona already back in shop

Picked up a Brand new white dial SS from my local AD. By the time I made it home, it had stopped working. Took it right back and now on the way to service center. Any ideas ? The AD shook it by his ear and said it rattles and will need a service and clean. This is a brand new watch. What would you do? The AD said no cost to me, but a watch less than 3 hours already stopping.

Take the free service at least then you know it likely won't need one for a solid 10/years

OK...I'll ask the obvious question: was the watch fully wound?

I would ask for a new watch without question. This is highly unusual. If he refuses I would dispute the charge on my credit card and never shop there again, I know my AD would take it back without question.

They offered a refund, but it is the last SS white dial they have.

That would leave me with a sour taste in my mouth. Will he/she give you another watch? If that goes to an RSC (which it probably will) you won't see it for six weeks.

If they won't give you another watch, return it. You want your money back.

Let them send that watch to be serviced while they order you in a new one.

I wouldn't listen to these guys who "insist" on another watch.

You can be sure, now, that your watch will be taken completely apart, every part checked for tolerance, any out-of-tolerance parts replaced, and it re-assembled to the latest Superlative Chronometer standards - by hand.

Think of it as having your new Ferrari engine completely blue-printed !! Now who wouldn't want that !

This is a brand new watch and this is completely unacceptable

Not my idea of how a brand new watch should work. Sorry. Let someone else have that "blue-printed" Daytona. Not me brother.

Just because you bought it "new" it may have been in stock for a while so the movement may well have been a bit clogged, especially if it hasn't been wound up and worn at regular intervals.

I've had 2 watches do just this to me : an omega and a tudor.

The omega I changed in the shop since it was just a seamaster and the dealer had several anyway.

The Tudor was an Aeronaut which would have been very difficult if not impossible to replace so I had it sent back to Tudlex for service and it's worked perfectly since.

My recommendation : send it to Rolex for a full service. It'll come back in excellent condition with a newly cleaned and oiled movement and might even look better - you don't know who's worn the watch whilst it was in the dealership.

I swear the watches that I've sent away to be serviced by Rolex come back looking better than they did new !

I would think if the AD wanted to keep your business they would do something for your massive disappointment and frustration! perhaps offer to find another one for you.

If only the RSCs did perfect work 100% of the time. Any time you send one in, you're running a risk, though relatively small, that it's going to come back scratched, dinged, or otherwise poorly looked after.

I would insist to get a replacement. I got my 116610ln replaced after one week of ownership because it wasn't working with in cosc. I told my AD that I wasn't ready to wait between 3-6 weeks to get it back from rsc. So they exchanged it for another one. Your Daytona is even more expensive so I would insist for it.

I totally agree... He talks about the OP's new watch being completely taken apart, as if someone would want their 3-hour-old watch completely taken apart...

The risk of the watch coming back scratched didn't appear to be relatively small for my Polar, since it came back with numerous scratches...

It's not a small risk...it's almost certain your watch will come back with scratches/dents/etc. At least that's my personal experience. You might get lucky.

Take the refund and keep shopping.

I never use an RSC for work, but the guy I use was formerly affiliated with both PA and Dallas. I'll just say that "off the record" conversations have made me glad to have avoided RSCs in the past. The one exception is the pseudo-RSC in SF. Those guys do top quality work with great care.

Unless you got a great dea, I would take a refund. You have an easy out, and the that Dayton isn't difficult to find anymore. Plus, RSC might scratch it up.
