Agree, bezel and patina looked nice to me. I am sure some experts will chime in but that was quick!

The Red Sub was a good value if you were looking for that "ghost" look. A little over polished but the nice dial, hands, ghost bezel, pip, and original crystal makes up for it.

Now, about that SuperOcean... I've been chasing one in decent condition for a while now. The one Hodinkee is offering is pretty beat and I'm really curious if it will sell at that price point (I'm sure it will)...

My future in collecting looks bleak...

Looks like they are all sold with the exception of the 1970 WG DD.

Additionally, this example from 1972 features a Mark V “red” Submariner dial; there are fewer examples of this type of dial, making it very desirable.

Is it true that the Mk V is rarer, or are they referring to the Red?

I would assume that they are referring to the Red.

I have a Mark V red sub and I always thought they were less desirable than the Mark IV dial because the Submariner logo does not pop like it does on the IV.

Anyone have any insight into this as it definitely sounds like they are saying the Mark V is a harder to come by dial and more desirable.

Hodinkee struck a gold mine which they created themselves. Preach about a brand/particular watch, put it for sale x days or weeks later and it's gone within the day making a nice profit.

I've read and seen it before, everytime they mention a specific watch the prices rise.

I think Hodinkee is referencing the entire Red series of Submariners being rare - the earliest references being the rarest.

Mark IV dials were the last series to use the more "vintage-feel" open 6's on the dial before they transitioned into the newer "modern" typeface. And also as you mentioned, the Mark IV had red print on white which made it pop more.
