Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Hello TRF, a few days ago I was able to visit Ho Chi Minh City for the first time

As an American, it was great to learn about the country's history and to see how quickly the city is advancing

View from the room

Took a 6 hour tour through part of the Mekong Delta

Old shells from Vietnam War, exhibited near the Cu Chi tunnels

My Hotel was called "Reverie Saigon" and it seemed many hotels retained the old name. The river is still called the Saigon River and the airport code is SGN.

My local guide referred to the city as Ho Chi Minh City but then waffled a bit with phrases like "Many Saigon people like to..."

Thank you, sir

And it's still possible to grab a good Banh Mi sandwich. This place charges 75 cents USD

Ed, I would highly recommend making a visit to HCMC the next time you're in SE Asia. I'm now planning on going to Hanoi as well

I didn't bring a watch on the trip

But I noted there were 2 Rolex ADs within a mile of my hotel. I considered popping in and buying a North Flag so I could have something decent on my wrist

Great pics, Steve. If you're still there, head over to the night market in District 1 (if you haven't already been). All sorts of tat sold but some excellent food on the barbecue

Here's a shot of when I was there just over two years ago.

Great pictures Steve.

Did you book the trip through an agent or on your own?

Looks delicious I took a quick stroll through Ben Thanh but sadly the wife pulled me away before I could check out the food

Thank you, I booked the trip myself. For the mekong delta and cu chi tunnels, I used a tour service called Les Rives. Had a great guide named Kang.

I got my entry visa at the local consulate. It's also possible to apply online and then pick up on arrival at the airport

Ah Saigon, it was my favourite SE Asian city and I loved to visit as often as I could. It was beautiful around Christmas with tasteful (i.e. nothing like the OTT, horrid gaudy displays in major Western cities) lights and decorations.

.....Until they started the new metro/underground project and tore up the square and park outside the Rex. Was absolutely gutted when I took my Mum on a tour of SE Asia 18 months ago and it had all been destroyed like that. I haven't been back since.

The loss of so many of the old shops and indoor market at that end of Le Loi was very sad too but nothing stays the same forever and it's still a great vibrant city with so much to explore and offer.

I can't wait to get back over that side of the world. There is so much history in Asia and Europe that we miss being in the U.S. Thanks for the great pics.

And now it looks like the US president is set to visit HCMC, after dining with Anthony Bourdain in Hanoi ...

I love HCMC. The Cu Chi tunnels are a must visit. It's crazy, that the tunnel tourists get to crawl through is actually twice as high as the original ones.
After the 100m "trek", I was out of breath and sweaty and slightly claustrophobic. The Viet Cong lived there for what, 14 years?
