5517 with maxi dial

Earlier in the week I posted a scan of a full-spec military-issue 5513 under cold British skies.

Yesterday was a little dull and I failed to capture the magic of a gilt dial 5513 so didn't post it, but this morning was sufficient for one of my 5517s to put in an appearance:

This is one of the second batch by case number, an 0552- with 1978 issue number.

Although sad that it no longer has sword hands, I actually rather like the configuration. Personally, while swords will always have been correct for a military 5513 or variant thereof, I find them aesthetically clumsy and unbalanced, utilitarian in their size rather than scaled for visual pleasure. All other criteria aside, I would far rather have a mil sub with a 60' bezel and merc hands than a sword hand mil sub with a 15' bezel. Some experience of both, so no axe to grind....

There is another significant variation here, though. A comparison with the very similar photo, of the 5513 which started the earlier thread, should make the differences in the dials very clear :

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=387340

I'd like to try an old Comex under bright skies at the next opportunity. Should I post in fresh threads, or keep adding to these?

With kind regards,

Haywood M

First, an apology for resurrecting this thread but it seemed indulgent to start a fresh one. I wished only to add some recent macro photographs of the watch above :

Some years ago, when looking at such potential purchases, photos like these would have been a blessing!
