Interesting observation from a Tourneau Salesman

He encounters too many customers who own more watches than days of the week and constantly look to upgrade or trade.

X2. Upon reflection he is encouraging you to spend more money than you were initially considering by ponying up for a "grail" so this could very well be a sales tactic to get a better commission. He may be counting on the fact that you would not be satisfied with 1 and return for more. This is if he is a smart man.

Of course if your Grail is a new Rolex Ceramic Daytona, you can't get one at Turdneau unless you are a VIP...I.e. Someone who has purchased multiple watches...something he advises against? 😆

For 99% of the population who are NON-WIS people - this is excellent advice. Get your grail, wear it every day for your entire lifetime and be happy with it!

It's a different story for WIS-FOLKS like us. We must suffer the pain and suffering of a lifelong thirst that cannot be quenched. The struggle is real and a grail is no more than a fairytale

I disagree on the sales rep's single (grail) watch hypothesis. That said, I think my maximum number of watches is three... otherwise while wearing one I'm wracked with guilt for leaving the others.

For those times when you are becoming bored with a watch, I recommend looking for a new strap to change its look and feel; it's usually a heck of a lot cheaper than a new watch.

i have thought of it but whats the fun in that? i enjoy watch forums, collecting etc....its become a hobby for me you could say.....not bad advice for someone but its only advice for someone who wants a watch and be done with it......

for most on here watches are a 'passion' if i dare say.....

I think there are watches out there that can be a "one and only" piece and furthermore if somehow forced to own only one piece I could think of one or two that would fit the bill. I don't ever see myself having 10 or 20 pieces but I certainly am looking to expand my collection to roughly 6-8. Most of what I have now is sport and very versatile but I would like to add a ROO or ROO Diver and perhaps something in precious metal on leather for a dressy occasion.

For the most part I agree with him but will always remain a collector. I've been fortunate to find several watches that fit the category he describes and will hang onto them all for life. They'll eventually be passed onto another generation to continue appreciating these fine items.

Some folks enjoy the process of getting a new to them watch and do so several times a year. We're human and over time these tangible items can become boring. My solution to that is owning several you love so that when this happens you can swap for one of your others and continue to enjoy this wonderful hobby. At the end of the day we all must do what makes us happy. Watches are one of the better interests to have financially considering how much of the value they retain short term (Rolex especially).

You know, I have often thought about this very subject...and wondered if I got the perfect watch, could I wear just that one. I don't think so, but having a bunch of watches is not my style either.

Lately I've been thinking about scenarios involving 2 or 4 watches. I think that's the sweet spot for me.

If we all have but one mood, or pastime, the salesman has a point. However, many are multi-faceted, have multiple moods and, therefore, wear different watches as a form of self-expression or to suit a particular circumstance. Blue jeans and tough manual labor, athletic pursuit, business meeting, condolence call; all seem to justify a different watch. Additionally, if watches are considered an art form, then collecting purely for esthetics is also totally justified. Collecting for investment reasons; perhaps upsetting to some, but who anoints one to sit in judgement of others?

I'm wearing a Fossil today. It's a nice Fossil, an automatic that keeps good time and looks nice. I felt like wearing it today. I have multiple watches that are worth much more and are very functional and beautiful. When I feel like wearing one of those, I wear it. In my case, accumulating watches has been healthier than paper investments, which never worked out because I'm not bright enough, or expensive wine, which I am unable to fully appreciate, or cars, which require more storage space.

This is interesting because I have 6 and was thinking about what it would take for me to go to one grail.

But then I remembered I have 2 sons and how I can pass on watches to them. You (they) could get an Explorer 2 for high school graduation. Sub for college graduate. Keep my Daytona and blnr ;)

Suuuuuuuuure, I'm just keeping them running strong the next 4 and 6 years!!!

I figure I'd go with DD. 40 is what's loved. I don't know why 41 is the red headed step child. That is another thread, though.

This is absolute nonsense.

Why would your watch be any different than anything else you own and wear or use, and, heaven forbid, admire and collect..

One belt, but it's a really nifty one !!

One pair of shoes, but they're the shiniest on the block !!

Or tell that to the guy with the model trains in his garage, or coins in his safe, or stamps in their books..

---- one watch !!! An impossible situation.
