I read here that the perpetual calendar is "the most developed form" of the simple date window that keeps track of the date, day of the week, month, year and leap years. My question is, how does my rolex know that it's currently July, 2008 when all I see is today's date, which is "30" ? I hope this is not a silly question!

Your rolex is not a perpetual calendar in the sense of complications. It has no idea what time of the year it is nor what month it is. It only displays the date and that's it unless it's a day date. February for example has 28 days in the month. You will have to set the watch to the 1st when 1 march rolls around. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I just realized that it was a stupid question. I was mislead for a moment by the "oyster perpetual date" written on the dial. I just realized that perpetual here means perpetual rotor, nothing to do with date. Thanks for confirming what I just realized.

If you hate to reset just buy the right watch. The Timex for $425 or the Lange for about $70,000

Oh but the Lange is so much more beautiful. But at my beer pocket book I could afford the Timex. It's a great looking Timex though.
